I mean, it is a blue (water) planet...... Not at all. Biohazard have asserted a trademark on the title Blue Planet as applied to an RPG. SJG would lose extremely quickly if they tried that trick. Copyright accrues automatically. Trademarks have to be asserted and defended. Unless Brin has both asserted and defended a trademark in 'Uplift', he doesn't have one. There is no copyright in concepts. There is no IP in concepts unless you can turn them into a trademark or patent. (And unless Brin can patent a viable technique for uplift, trademark is his only option.) > I think that although some groups take IPR to stupid lengths (Palladium > forex) it needs to be protected as it is what pays for the writers to eat > etc. Especially if they do it full time... Well, yes. This is how I'm paying for food at the moment, in fact. Normally, I'm a D&D player (in fact, I've written a couple novels for WoTC), but I'm taken with the BP setting. Awesome stuff. That said, I've got a couple questions. First, is there a damage rating for striking in unarmed combat in addition to the strength score of the attacker? I don't seem able to locate it, and would find it odd if a human with average strength -- zero -- could do no damage while striking. Second, I see reference in Fluid Mechanics Master Weapons Table to the Silva Special 14mm, but don't seem able to locate a description in the text itself. Any help? In any case, I'm looking forward to participating on the list. Maybe I'll get the bug to write a BP novel someday. :-) Paul Kemp *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. This posted to the list a while back: we definitely need to get that errata up. Unarmed attacks do Strength + 1 damage rating.
