Roger Penrose has persuasively argued on mathematical and logical grounds that AI is an unattainable grail. As I recall, the main comps mimic human personalities in Blue Planet, so some degree of artificial intelligence may have been attained. Personally, I think androids would spoil the ambience, but the "evolution" of the small, bug-like robots being developed today might have some interesting implications - they could be used for patrolling perimiters and swimming versions could be used to monitor events below the surface.
