Adam, Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you but it just occurred to me that most of the time there are instructions sewn on the inside of the canvas "bag" that holds the tent. That would be the first place I'd check. I'm sure there's a TM on it (there's a Tech Manual on everything, one of the questions our brigade commander used to ask new lieutenants is the TM number for the five gallon water can). They are having all the manuals published on CD now but I don't have any more information. From: Jason Hockley [jh596@soton.ac.uk] Sent: Friday, January 22, 1999 9:08 AM To: blue_planet@MPGN.COM Subject: [BLUE PLANET] - Greetings and questions Hello, A sometime lurker here with a couple of questions and comments. I may have missed something in the books and archives but I hope I'm not repeating things here or asking pointless questions. First of all, what is the state of religion in Blue Planet, and specifically on Poseidon and those parts of the solar system further away from Earth? There is some description of the Church of the Whalesong Theogony, but what about all the myriad religions we have on Earth right now? What happens to them over the Blight and what is left at the other end? Part of my reason for asking this is a book I read a little while ago. I forget the exact title but it was by Arthur C. Clarke and about an astronaut that seeks the sanctuary of the oceans after being involved in an accident that leaves him spinning alone in space for several hours. It was written about fifty years ago I think, but with the near future in mind. In this book most of the major religions of the world had slowly dwindled to low numbers or disappeared entirely. The only one left was Buddhism in its various forms and the people in the book join forces with them to save the whale population from being raised like cattle for food. Has anyone else read this? My second reason for asking was that I was looking through a book for another of my favourite RPG's, that shall remain nameless to avoid offense to the Biohazard bunch (although I see a few names here that are also on a mailing list for it), and reading about various factions of a Church. It occured to me that there doesn't seem to be any profession in the Blue Planet book that covers Priest specifically. There must no doubt be others not mentioned and it occured to me that there are probably a good few people on this list who could give ideas of the skills and skill groups required for their jobs. So as a suggestion to anyone reading this, if your job isn't covered by one of the professions already listed, why not post a list of those skills and areas you require? Personally, I'm a Maths student so I have no idea what a real job is like yet. Anyway, I've taken up enough of your time. Thank you for listening and I hope someone is willing to reply. With the recent Blight, I suspect that many people embraced religion as a source of comfort. Also, humans haven't found anything that has shaken their beliefs to the core. There hasn't been any verified proof that any other intelligent life exists in Universe, so all the major religions are pretty much intact. While, it would be interesting to see how the various religions would react should proof of intelligent life be disclosed to the public, I don't think that it would be appropriate material for a game company to publish. I believe that such topics should be left to individul GMs. Mike Z *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. What happens to them over the Blight and what is left >at the other end? Fundamentalism and extremism seem to be the current direction of organized religion, as more moderate congregations find it difficult to organize amidst the bustle of modern society. Still, while participation in religious activities has generally been in decline in the West since at least the time of the Enlightenment, actual belief in God and heaven has remained fairly steady and has even begun to increase in recent years. This may be a prelude to a resurgence of religious faith as the millennium rapidly approaches, or as the West becomes increasingly disillusioned with the mundane rationalism of the past few centuries. Islam has remained strong primarily because it was a fundamentalist religion to begin with. Still, even in Iran, the self-appointed bulwark of the Islamic world, public rumblings against the theocratic dictatorship evidence the degree to which Western secularism has permeated the region. The syncretic faiths of Asia (particularly Hinduism) have always adapted to cultural change simply by assimilating any new religious beliefs that present themselves. This will probably remain true far into the future. Applying this to the post-apocalyptic world of Blue Planet, one could probably assume that Christianity is strongest in the American West, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, and South America, where anarchy prevails and the Church, whatever the denomination, actively provides moral guidance and humanitarian relief to the distressed populations. Islam will probably be more "relaxed" than it is today, as the Moslem peoples are gradually forced to reconcile their views with the realities of modern society. (Anasi Systems and Atlas Materials are probably leaders in this movement toward greater secularization.) As stated above, Hinduism will likely keep going on sheer inertia, assimilating any interesting or utilitous ideas that happen along while retaining the basic precepts of its millennia old foundations. A final note on minor religions: Look for the embryonic, pantheistic faiths of the New Age movement to gain sizable followings as they perceive the environment to suffer ever greater depredations at the hands of human industry. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. You should read _The Songs of Distant Earth_ for his take on Armageddon and waterworlds, even if it isn't quite like Blue Planet. It also has a great soundtrack by Mike Oldfield, available in New Age sections of CD stores. I would use the Scholar template for most religious types. Communication and Human Science skills are the most important for most men and women of religion. Maybe if you could explain your own definition of the term... I'd think it more accurate to say that Islam merely leans a lot more towards encouraging the mixing of church and state, which is a lot more destructive than fundamentalism on its own. And I've found that Islam can be as compassionate and just a religion as Christianity or Judaism. Which is, again, why I wonder what you mean by labeling it a fundamentalist religion. I don't think such ideas should be discouraged at all. Although the bottom line is still what counts. Kai Poh >Universe, so all the major religions are pretty much intact.
