And, as most know, Chainmail was the precursor to D&D, then onto AD&D, then onto AD&D 2nd/Revised, and now onto D&D 3rd Edition. So, while different then previous versions of produced D&D the current 3e does have a predessors in it's line - but more importantly, which makes you right as well, the designers are not living in a shell, so they would have noticed it all. No? All in all, I prefer d20 to all previous versions of D&D - in fact, I feel the OGL has revived the hobby in an unusual way, in fact it's almost unified us. Look how argumentative the various sects were, prior to the OGL - White Wolf'ers hating TSR's, hating et al. How, easily so, we can discuss the thought of working on companies setting into d20 without too much worry of a flame war, etc. Personally I like Blue Planet v2 as is, nice system and easy to learn, but I can see the reason why some would like a GURPS version, or a d20 version, or a CP2020 version - less initiation time for your players. Anyhow, I can now see your point a bit better - in respect to d20 being a variation, ruleswise, of CP2020 - so it's all good. Robert N. That is one of the nice things about BP the ecology seems to make sense. It makes suspension of disbelief easier when the world works in a similar way to our own. Of course some creatures such as the Greater White are pretty monstrous, but then Earth has giant squid, sharks, sperm whales, tigers, and of course human beings. Naturalistic wildlife is a very hard thing to pull off on the fly. The old Traveller supplement "Animal Encounters" was a good start but awfully light on descriptions. a "10kg scavenger" just isn't very evocative. For Earthdawn, I created a food chain tree of all the published creatures, divided by biome, then started filling in the noticeable gaps. I wrote I think 48 creatures before the game ceased publication, most of which were published in Earthdawn Journal. I figured if there were big nasty predators around, there had to be some pretty tough prey animals to require such a big nasty predator. Herbivores can be just as dangerous as carnivores, if you don't respect them. Ask anybody who's ever been on the wrong end of an irritable Guernsey. :) Imagine the trouble you could cause with a big school of fish just small enough to slip past the intake baffles on a sea sled's engine. Has anybody created a food chain dagram for Poseidon? It's only got a couple of biomes to cover -- coastal waters, open sea, deep sea, coastal lands, inland peaks, and that's about it if I recall correctly. From: Andrew Ragland [araglan@us.ibm.com] Sent: Friday, February 09, 2001 9:03 PM To: blue_planet@lists.ient.com Subject: [BLUE PLANET] - Homeschooler Game Update: 2-9-01 The homeschooler gaming group started play today. I handed out slips of paper to each player, with instructions to discuss them with each other only in-character. The slips each had three rumors they'd heard about the new teacher, at least one of which was true, and one of which was outrightly false, while the third might have a grain of truth to it or not. All I told the players was that they had heard these things, but didn't know if any of them were true or not. I introduced a local bully and his two henchpeople, who gave some minor trouble to a couple of player characters, insulting one and ambushing another, although the bully was upset that he'd ambushed the wrong kid. He was laying in wait for Kiro, but got Tyler instead, and broke a knuckle when he swung and hit Tyler in the side of the head, where Kiro's solar plexus would have been. I introduced Zeno, the school's custodian, a former fisherman who lost three fingers off his left hand in a boat accident, and then my wife introduced the teacher, a Silva named Lillian Augustino. Plenty of great reactions there, as the players had done a lot of in-character arguing as to what was true about the new teacher, when none of them had her species correct. :) Interaction between the new teacher and the students as they tried to get to know each other was amusing, considering some of the misinformation I'd planted. After school, three of the players went off with the one NPC student to help him scrape barnacles (or the Poseidon equivalent) off his dad's boat. They each got paid 5cs when the NPC's dad (one of the Newport police, FYI) showed up and saw how much work they'd gotten done, so they've gone off down the docks to a diner for lunch. Tyler went off on his own to go back to his house and work on a hover board he was trying to build, and got jumped by Stuart, the bully. Zeke and Bink, who had gone back to their house to get Bink's dad, an electrician, to fix Zeke's palmtop, only to find that he was off at a work site, found Tyler moments later, and hauled him off to their house to get his bruised noggin checked out. Well, I've been telling Sean (Tyler's player) that he needed to have his head examined... The players have to bring, in writing, three things their characters want to learn in this school term, for next session. A couple of them are starting projects. Montgomery is building a Lego Mindstorms project to get a skill level in remote operation. Jeremiah is building a robot from a Heathkit to get a skill in electronics. Eli is working on a report on police surveillance for a skill level in sneaking. Jeremiah is also working on getting a skill level in driving, by getting a drivers' manual from the Highway Patrol and studying it. More next week, as the game session moves permanently to Thursdays and to the recreation hall of Emmanual Lutheran Church in beautiful downtown Rockford.
