For information or directions, please e-mail me at the address in my signature, below. Liam handed in a 3.5 essay on Earth Day, a prerequisite to his further involvement in the group, as he needed some basic knowledge to support the ecological concerns raised in the game. As one of the older kids in the group, at age 12, a bit more is expected of him in terms of research and report writing. Eli handed in a report on wiretapping in relation to the Watergate break-in, hoping to get his first level in Sneaking. I informed him that this would not be possible, as the report had nothing to do with sneaking, but wiretapping is a form of surveillance, which comes under the Skill heading of Shadowing. Eli thus received his first level in Shadowing. He has been advised that if he turns in a report on how the wiretaps were planted, that could gain him the desired Sneaking skill level. As well, further reporting on the mechanics of wiretapping could raise his Shadowing. The session started off a bit slow, but gathered momentum for a rousing finish. Zeke and Bink had taken Tyler to Zeke and Bink's home for medical attention following an encounter with a local bully. Bink's mother (Zeke is adopted) directed them to the native healer, as she was worried about the bruise on Tyler's temple. The healer applied some nettlefish ointment to reduce the swelling, and gave Tyler a nasty-tasting potion for the pain, but didn't think he had a concussion or anything broken. This afforded an opportunity to introduce the concept of barter. Bink now has to tell his father, an electrician, that the healer needs a light fixture wired in for her upstairs office. Tyler went on home to work on his hoverboard. Unfortunately, he botched his die rolls, and now has to buy new parts before he can continue trying to make the board work. Tyler went off to Mr. Gemuenden's house, and earned 5cs scraping barnacles off Mr. Gemuenden's sailboat, a task which some of the other kids had previously worked at but not finished. Zeke and Bink went off to find their father, Kevin Corido, who was working at the military housing area at the north end of Newport. They arrived to find a chain link fence going up, and a couple of soldiers guarding the road while a gate and guard shack were being erected. Zeke and Bink both tried to Fast Talk one of the soldiers, to little effect, but Bink's howl of protest drew the attention of a sergeant. The sergeant checked his bodycomp and found that Kevin Corido was indeed a civilian contractor and currently on-base, so he detailed the solder to take the kids to their father. After a brief and confusing jeep ride, the kids were let out at a spanking new office-type building, only the first floor of which was anywhere near complete. They found their way upstairs, met with a silva construction worker who issued them hardhats and took them to the foreman, and were subsequently shown to where Kevin was working. Kevin fixed Zeke's bodycomp, a matter of a few quick adjustments, and sent the kids back home. They got lost trying to find the gate, saw a really big missile being trucked through the base, and got escorted off base by an MP, who was none too pleased that a couple of native kids were wandering around unescorted. They haven't told the rest of the group about the missile, much less any adults, so that adventure seed lies dormant for now. Twitch, Dave, Kiro and Max went to Tony's Diner for lunch. Upon entry, Kiro was dragooned by his uncle Tony into helping with the dish washing, as Kiro's player was late to the session. The other three had lunch, Max having a bit of culture shock when he found he couldn't get a reuben, beef being a premium-priced delicacy in Newport. They then set off to go spurt fishing, Kiro and Twitch having the idea of catching some soft spurts alive and breeding them in a tidal pool ("Aquaculture for Fun and Profit"). Much trouble and hilarity ensued. First, Max, a cat born on Excelsior Station in Earth orbit, had never been in a rowboat before. He fell into the bay trying to get into the boat from the dock. Second, Max can't swim, that not being the type of skill a Stationer tends to have. Kiro had to dive in and rescue Max. Andrew, Max's player, roleplayed his character through the near-drowning and subsequent fishing trip so well I awarded him extra XPs at the end of the session. Then the players realized they needed antivenin if they were going to go spurt fishing, as a precautionary measure. Twitch zipped over to the native healer's place on his hover scooter, but found he still owed the healer for the last batch of antivenin. Completely forgetting about the 5cs in his pocket he'd earned last session, Twitch gave up and rode back to the dock. By this time, Dave and Kiro had scrounged up a life jacket for Max, gotten him into the boat, and loaded their gloves, net, and tackle. Kiro asked to borrow the hover scooter so he could go try negotiating with the healer. Unfortunately, Kiro has no Driving skill. He lost control of the scooter before he cleared the dock, fell into the bay, and the scooter plowed into a barrel of iced-down fish that had just been unloaded from a nearby fishing boat. The kids had to think fast to keep the fishermen from taking it out on them, but good news, bad news, the fish were consigned to Tony's Diner. Kiro had to go explain to his uncle that he'd just trashed tomorrow's lunch portions. Tony inspected the damage, and found that about a quarter of the barrel was unusable. He told Kiro that it was a good thing the boys were going fishing, as they now had to make up the difference. Zeke and Bink showed up while Max repaired the damaged hover scooter. Agreement was made, and the lot set off in two rowboats to go out to the point and see what they could bring in. They met up with an excitable young dolphin named Seeker, and his not very bright orca buddy Abominable ("Bom for short"). Kiro made a deal with Seeker that the fin and his buddy could get a free lunch at Tony's if they helped the boys with their catch. Bom took the painters to the two rowboats in his teeth, and towed the group out to the point in record time. With two boys in each boat holding the upper corners of the net, Seeker took the lower edge, and Bom went out to drive a school of fish their way. Max sat low in his boat and shivered. When the fish arrived, Seeker swooped the net down, under, and back up, at which point it all broke loose. The next few minutes were spent in frantic shouting, die rolls, lunges, grabs, and Max nearly going over the side again, as they tried to hook the four corners of the net onto the oarlocks of the rowboats. With everyone's help, the catch was brought in, nearly filling one boat. Twitch injured his hand mildly in the process, which gave Zeke an opportunity to use his First Aid skill (and subsequently raise it a level with XPs). The boys had to get Twitch out of the water in the middle of landing the net, so the blood in the water wouldn't attract large predators. At long last, they headed for home, arriving back at the dock right at sunset with (as it turned out) some 250 pounds of fish, about three quarters of a barrel. This was a good thing, as Tony was dismayed at the deal Kiro had made. "Have you ever seen an orca eat?" he shouted, tugging at his hair. "He'll wipe out that extra half barrel all by himself!" But everything worked out well at the end. The session ended with the group (minus Tyler) standing outside Tony's Diner, tired, sweaty, smelling strongly of fish, and with a few scrapes and bruises, but feeling like they'd really accomplished something major. I gave out points for the fishing trip, for Max's roleplaying, for a few skill uses here and there, and we broke until next week. I've got another kid interested, Robbie, who watched this session with growing interest, starting out at a nearby table and ending up sitting next to Eli, really wishing he had a character. I'm working on getting together with him and his parents to explain the rules both of Blue Planet and of the way I'm doing character advancement, and to build a character for him. More on this next week, as the adventure continues. Also, I found many wildlife Web Site talking about the litigation around LFAS (Low Frequency Active Sonar) as they endangered wildlife and human life (sound much too loud and dangerously damaging the ears of marin mamals) and of course potentially the Aquaform and other cetaceans characters in BP...
