Mike Z ** That's cool. I was considering a literally platform-independent model, probably in CGI form as well. However, I know that Palladium has severe issues with people writing any sort of code that uses their material, so I wanted to check around with everyone first. I kinda dig the interface to the V1 creator, and thought I'd try to stick to that. Cool stuff :) My friend and I were a little dismayed at first after finding out that was the V1 generator, coz we're going to be playing V2. Hehe. **** Windows is sorta platform independent. Both the Mac and Linux have emulators that will allow a person to run window's programs. ** *shrugs* Still, you have to have a larger amount of resources to run those emulators most of the time, particularly the *X ones. Besides, I was looking more at a text-based interface for the time being. It'll be a bit slower, but (I hope) help the player learn the generation system better if it's a step-by-step process. I could also write a CGI/HTML front-end for it, and eventually up it to a graphical interface. The language I'm playing with currently is called REBOL **SHAMELESS PLUG** at http://www.rebol.com/ and it has the basic text interface and an available graphical interface. Plus the text-based material interfaces most sweetly with CGI ;) **** If you do proceed with a program, be warned that modeling and entering all the data is an extremely time consuming and mind numbing task. Also, while the system looks easy to implement on ** hehehe. Yeah, I'm aware of that. 'Tis always the rule. I'm interested in this partially so I can get a better idea of the workings of the game and all, also so it'd force me to get down and dirty with the nuts and bolts of the system, learn all of the exceptions and whatnot. **** the surface, there are many small things that are the exception to the general rule. Skills such as Languages are a pain to implement as well as many of the skill packages. ** *nods* Well, first is to create the generic, over-all engine. Then code in the exceptions once I have that part working. *grins* We'll see. I'll probably never get around to finishing it; watch me ;) -C *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. Here i find only D&D 3 and White Wolf stuff. Wagner ** Hehe. I think part of it with our gamestore guy is where he reads what's popular in various magazines, and also based upon what people order. For instance, if someone orders a bunch of source books, chances are he's going to be GM'ing a game. To have a game, you need players, so chances are more people are going to need copies of the player's guides and so forth. The games that stick out most promimently in my mind at the local store are 3rd Addiction (who first said that? wasn't it on this list?), White Wolf, Palladium-based, Mech Warrior and Shadowrun. They stick out in my mind. *shrugs* Anyways, back on topic *heh*, my GM-to-be has let us (the three players) borrow his copy of the player's guide, so we can see if we like it before purchasing, for instance. If we get serious about this, I'm going to have to buy the whole set for myself ;) Just how many books are there (for V2)? Moderator's Guide, Player's Guide, Fluid Mechanics, First Colony, Frontier Justice...? -C *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. You think I was going to say "Hey, here's a generator for this game I came up with last night..."? ;) Besides, I love making plugs for things I like and use. If you were to visit my website, you'd see on the main page that I give thanks to my host provider (company and man), even though he requires no such thing. Seriously, I would be listing everyone and everything I could think of in the credits, and a sort of 'splash screen' (kind of tough to do in a text interface, but hey..) mentioning the game's name, the companies, the authors, etc. Give credit where credit's due, no sweat. **** authors themselves AND you don't charge for it I'm relatively ** *grins* I don't think anyone would want to buy my work anyways ;) **** sure Greg and Jeff will be okay with it. Keep plugging at it. After all, what's the first exercise any programming book teaches you? The "Hello World!" program, of course! It's been done a billion times before, but it's still good practice. When it comes to coding, reinventing the wheel is a common exercise - and you sometimes come up with a better wheel ;) And besides all of that, you might have a certain interface or certain features that the other programs don't. -C *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
