And yes, I can see that a community composed of PhDs would spend as much time as they could teaching their children. It doesn't have to be classroom time. Instruction can happen on a fishing boat, while mending nets, while gathering food, etc. Keep in mind that the native population was only "alone" on Poseidon for two generations, tops. While the natives may not have access to much modern technology, they could quite easily have a higher education level than someone coming from one of Earth's Free Zones. If it's been 100 years since planetfall before recontact, then that'd be closer to 5 generations. Even if you take into account Long John, that just messes with how well/long they live, not how soon they reach maturity and start bearing children. I'm not saying we're talking 'ignorant natives', but I still feel there might be a tendancy in a certain percentage of the population to more or less reject superfluous pursuits in favor of survival. This has been one of the, in my opinion, greatest hurdles humanity had. We could not pursue higher education until we no longer struggled for survival. When the difference between knowing your P's and Q's and knowing how to keep your ribs from meeting your spine comes to bear, well... Again, my opinion. On a similar side note, the character I've just built for my upcoming first BP game is the offspring of native parents; one who lived in a sort of suburb as a trader, the other as a tribal resident moved to the city after meeting her husband-to-be, and become the sort who believe a sort of "just go along with it" pacifism towards the GEO and Incorporate. Anyways, I digress. -C -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mail2Web - Check your email from the web at http://www.mail2web.com/ . *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. Children learn, whether or not they are taught. They're natural information sponges. If the adults around them guide them, and answer their questions, and encourage their interests, the kids will learn tremendous amounts in a very short time. I started teaching my twelve year old HTML last night. He's already mastered the concepts of head and body sections, paragraph alignment, font changes, inline images, and use of tables. I've given him a copy of Sizzling HTML Jalfrezi's alphabetical reference guide (www.jalfrezi.com), and he'll come to me if he has any questions. He's also studying cryptography right now, in order to decipher the glyphs on the walls of the Ruins of Alph in Pokemon Silver, and has been researching the use of letter frequency tables in conjunction with that. On Poseidon, there's tremendous opportunities for learning using either the home-lesson or unschooling methodology. When you go out fishing, you can pass on information about climatology, meteorology, marine biology, navigation, marine engine mechanics, first aid, survival, and of course fishing. Plus, you have time to talk about ethics, morality, philosophy, books that you've read, etc. The Socratic method applies here, the classical question and nswer method of teaching. As well, discussion is a well-established teaching and learning method. Anybody on the list ever read Daniel Quinn's =Ishmael= or =My Ishmael=? We're applying the Ishmael techniques to the homeschooling Blue Planet group with good results thus far. Poseidon natives are less likely to know things that do not directly apply to their lives, but if information or skills don't have a use, why are you learning them? Teaching does not require a classroom. As a matter of fact, the classroom is a recent invention, and heavily tied to the Industrial Revolution. Currnt American methods of primary and secondary school instruction are great at turning out assembly line workers, but stink at turning out project-oriented or task-oriented workers. Part of college is teaching the students to think for themselves, and to be self-motivated, instead of sitting back and being spoonfed. Excuse me, I'll get down off the soapbox now. :) FYI, I'm running late on the week's update because of extenuating circumstances including my day job and a sick child, but will post that before this coming week's session. Again, my opinion. ================================== I think the difference here is in our perception in how much time the natives would have to spend on meeting their basic needs. In a resource rich environment such as Poseidon, they would have sufficient time each day, particularly with the longer days, of meeting their needs for food, clothing, and shelter and intellectual pursuits. As for the timeline, I need to check my books again, but my memory is that there was only about 70-80 years until Recontact. I believe the 20 odd year difference in our numbers is due to the year between Recontact and the start of game play.
