The hybrid crops grow to a fine and healthy size, but they can't produce usable seeds, so the next season, the farmers are forced to buy from Monsanto again, instead of using seeds from the crops. I think it was in Newsweek or Time, one of the major magazines. I was reading the International edition, not the US edition. Actually, there are some South African corps with small merc units; order was such a sometime thing down there for a while that the gov't just let them start doing their own defense. There are unfounded (of course) rumors of them using these units on each other too. How's that for freaky? > PS- I wonder, "what if" Microsoft & Disney merged? > That's particularly nasty because I remember when Disney had such devotion to production quality that they coloured every cell of _Tron_. Cheap ripoffs of rival theme parks bundled into future versions, with plenty of deliberate programming bugs ("Disney 02 is guaranteed to help your vacation run 36% faster than ever before."). A hideous composite of Mickey Mouse and Bill Gates: mouse ears, bad hair, squeaky voice, aloof personality, cutthroat business sense ("Haha! Hey Pluto, I feel like buying Austria today. Although... the two Hanover guards involved in the accidental shooting actuall got beaten to death by angry fans, so there wouldn't be anyone left to give quotes, but it would be _just like_ a late night show host to get the facts mixed up. And Gertrude Baum isn't that fat, she said so in an official press release the day after the show. Expect some interesting developments on CTN soon. Correct me if I'm wrong, all you botany brains out there, but hasn't this been true of most species of domestic corn for some time? I thought it had been so selectively bred that, although the strain wasn't necessarily "sterile", it still needed substantial human intervention for new seeds.
