I've always had the impression that it's not that easy to get to Poseidon, that there are waiting lists for free berths on ships going through the wormhole...but I could be wrong. >> For private citizens, but GEO can do what it wants to do. << Hmm...if it was cheaper to send someone though the wormhole than imprison them, then why would the Bose Strand prison get built? Over a period of a 20 year term, that is 1,000,000 cs. The cost of shipping a person to Poseidon plus training would be about 100K ~ 200K cs. Put them in a remote settlement with a few drones watching, the cost goes down to around 5k a year per person. So shipping a non-violent criminal to Poseidon and setting them up in a remote settlement would cost a lot less than locking them up, plus once their sentence is up, they would most likely stay on Poseidon. Bose Strand is more of an island than a prison. It is monitored from a nearby military base for escape attempts. The actual island is in anarchy where the strongest survive. To join in the conversation about "Do convicts get sent to Poseidon?"... There is a tradition, a history, that mankind has used convicts to aid settlement - look at Australia, for example. The sort of people who WANT to emigrate are the top-flight, go-getter sorts. Corporate high-flyers, entrepreneurs, techies, explorers, missionaries, academics and so on. But you still need people to empty the dustbins, clean the floors, provide 'grunt' labour for building projects, and so on. Individual corps may tranship some of their own grunt labour as well as the professional staff, but there will never be enough of them. So there may well be scope for GEO to transport some unwilling settlers, who will basically be used as slave labour for the duration of their sentence. Of course, Poseidon is also a good place for a 'fresh start,' so you may find people who have done their time on Earth attempting to catch a ride through the wormhole. Perhaps there's even a charity to whom ex-cons can apply for funds to do so. Some thoughts... Gus: Chears for the complement, I double as a freelance writer / editor, when I have the time, I've worked on Eden Studios Conspiracy X (www.edenstudios.net) and currently on LPJDesign's Haven: City of Violence (www.lpjdesign.com), so it all gets to mix and cross polinate, plus I'm working on a few projects all my own and trying to run a BP game on Sundays. Also working on a BP website for which I'm generating matterial, so of which you've seen already... How about '50 fathoms down' as a working title, so I'm building a campaign around the idea of the Rhine Foundation sending an expedition out to investigate claims of Abo 'psi-ability', also a group called the Melelev Institute which should permit a new character origins / backgrounds, and finally at least one appearnace of a Virt, new character race not really intended for players but give me a month or so and you'll be able to judge my ideas for yourself when I get the site up... Served a sentence up here in northern NY, and was still able to command his 'business' down in NYC through his connections. Not lore. "In a time when most of America was selling apples on the street corner and waiting in soup lines, Lucky Luciano lived the high life, even while in prison." *shrugs* Also note that, like in 'The Reality Dysfunction', a 'boss' might set it up so that a person /specifically/ gets sent off-world; be they a stoolie, or extra violent, or just not needed any longer. > common, a lawyer might not even be needed anymore. A thought: Those are the people you don't necessarily /want/ to leave. Think about it; if you could ship all the trash out and keep the 'good guys' in, wouldn't it be utopia? Sounds pretty wild man. I've bookmarked your site; haven't looked around it too much yet. Mind if I include it in my list of BP links on my site? http://www.chalz.net/bp/ if you'd like to check it out first. Nothing special. I'd like to hear when you get this stuff polished. -C *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
