I play both, running Forgotten Realms in 3e and Traveller in GURPS - both are solid systems, but any belief in one being more complex then the other is simply not true. For the record, I prefer the smoothness of 3e combat over GURPS, but I like GURPS skill system and point based character creation better. On a BP note, I'm quite pumped at the idea of another system to draw players into the game - GURPS would rock for BP, more so then D20, although it could easily be done. Robert N. Emerson p.s. For the record, it is my opinion the Steve Jackson's spouted diatribes against 'munchins' is base hypocrisy since his system of character generation can easily be all about min/maxing. ;) ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Saturday, July 14, 2001 8:18 AM Subject: Re: [BLUE PLANET] - GURPS Blue Planet > PS: if you want a true complex character creation process take the Rolemaster > (RIFTS and palladium system too). I agree. I'd rather not see GURPS _or_ d20 Blue Planet (I want more straight BP supplements) - but if it will bring in more players, which equals more money, which equals more of the books I _do_ want, then I'm all for it. I'll be buying GURPS Blue Planet for just that reason. > p.s. For the record, it is my opinion the Steve Jackson's spouted diatribes > against 'munchins' is base hypocrisy since his system of character > generation can easily be all about min/maxing. ;) That can happen with any system. Either you make it too rigid that even non-munchkins are stifled or you make it roomy enough for everyone to have their space, min/maxing or not. I could really care less if the guys in the other room min/max their days away - I'm not going to play with them. I don't see why anyone really bothers to spend much time _trying_ to stop them either. It's not worth the sacrifice on game flexibility. Just write you game the way you want and tell the GMs to have a backbone and feel confident in saying "No, I won't allow that." So is Steve a hypocrite? No, although why he bothers to rail against them, I don't really know. Of course, I also haven't _read_ any of his rants on the subject either, but I'm familiar with the view. I've just picked up "First Colony", becuase it was the only Blue Planet book in the store yesterday, but I first have to read the two core books! I suppose I'll end up buying them all, anyway. :) Another (somewhat stupid) question: Isn't the GEO Marshall income far too low, compared to the other profiles'. Aren't they supposed to be megahyperelite forces? And a comment: I found the Character Profiles section enticing and very, very, very, very useful, being a newcomer to BP. It serves admirably as a quick guide to the "niches" of Poseidon. I first thought it to be useless, but it ended up being quite the opposite. But seriously, it _is_ a government job. I haven't run into any games where a player actually gets a salary. It is probably low if you plan on using those figures. If the players use for example the correct combination of limitations for psionics powers they can create very powerful character with little points. In my opinion GURPS is a good system only for realistic adventures. For adventures with powerful characters I prefer Big Eyes Small Mouths or Champion. In the case of Blue Planet I like the setting and I don't care about the rules system. If the creators of BP want in the future to convert the BP to D20 for me it is ok. I will continue to buy the supplements because I like the the setting. Wagner ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert N.
