I was watching the sailing magazine on Eurosport last night and they had BIG trimarans racing on it. I'll see if there's any coverage on their website. The pojnt is, these things were really big, manoueverable and fast. They seemed to have crews arround the half dozen mark, but that could just be what they need for racing. They also seemed to be dealing with pretty big surf, which multihulls are not (iirc) renowned for. Lots of real-world data on small civilian sub design, life support, propulsion, crush depths, etc, etc. Getting back to last weeks super-cav discussions. So the 20th C saw one-person vehicles break the sound barrier in air and on land.(300-350m/s) Anyone forsee a race in this century or the BP period to break it underwater(for a set depth, say 10m) in a personal supercav rocketsub? 1500 m/s or so I think, but corrections welcome. (~2700 kts? - I'm impressed) Make a good story seed to have the various Incorp sponsoring teams competing for the record. Research, intrigue, rivalry, dangerously high-powered vehicles, natives angry at disturbed/dead fish... Hmmm, the surface interaction of the mach 5 shockwave would be an interesting special effect. Do we have any hydrodynamics types willing to make a prediction of the side effects? And as for the sub breaking through it's own sonic shockwave, the interaction would be weird since as I understand it the speed of sound increases with depth. Great potential for spectacular accidents - with that sort of power, any rocket-powered needlesub breaking the surface would quickly go suborbital. The need for speed :) Andrew ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? My name is Jeff, and I'm a new member of this list. I figured I'd take the time to introduce myself and say hello. I bought my copies of the Blue Planet Player's and Moderator's Guides two weeks ago, and fell in love with the game...I read the books while I was on vacation, and must say the setting is friggin excellent. I haven't been this into a setting based game since 1995 (DP9's Heavy Gear), and it's great. Kudos to all the people involved in putting the game together. I have a few questions about the game. The books I hape are labeled "V2", which I figure means 2nd Edition...what is different between the two editions? What promopted the switch? Since I got into it recently, I know very little about the background of the game itself. Also, did any other game systems provide inspiration for the Synergy system? I've noticed it shares alot of concepts with DP9's Silhouette Engine. I like Synergy alot, as it's a nice and tight system that's pretty fast. I'm hoping my players will react to it as well as I have. Well, again, kudos for making such an awesome game. I look forward to becoming a member of the Blue Planet online community. -Jeff 'Oro-San' James E-Mail: daigouji_gai@nergal.org Website: http://www.jamesfamily.com/jeff (Changing soon though!) *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. After the success with DiskWars, Fantasy Flight Games was interested in a SF RPG line. Rather than try to develop one themselves they shopped around for a pre-existing game looking for a partner. Jeff was starting to get a little burned out on running the business end of things at Biohazard so he had been looking around for a partner as well. They (fortunately) hooked up and part of the deal was to produce a second edition of the game. The rules from 1st edition were dropped entirely. A few corrections and changes were made, the material from Archipelago (which was out of print by this time) as well as 10,000 new (original) words were added (about 40% to the PG and 60% to the MG) to make 2nd edition. > Also, did any other game systems provide inspiration for the > Synergy system? As one of the people who helped design the original rules I will say that I like Greg's system a *lot* more. It's neat, tight, quick-paced while still retaining enough authenticity and believability to satisfy me as a player.
