It's certainly refreshing to realise just how much thought and debate a simple thing like a roleplaying game can generate. Dan Davenport's review also seems to have converted quite a few people to the game. And, of course - Los Isolotes are actually one of the tiny island groups that isn't anywhere near any of the large archipelagoes. Anyone else trying the same route as the LI natives to get to the Darwin Archipelago could easily have missed them altogether. Being halfway between the island groups was the "selling point" for LI as a setting, as they are a stop-off point with a high percentage transient population. Plus they are isolated from anywhere "civilised" and have a limited GEO/Legal presence - so could easily have a *very* "frontier" feel (not that BP doesn't already...) >Which could make a good candidate for a sourcebook. Hello all, This may have already been brought up, I'm not entirely certain, but I recently finished reading Heavy Weather by Bruce Sterling and it seemed the sort of thing that might appeal to other BP fans. The main scientific focus of the book is that of environmental pollution leading to disrupted weather patterns. As usual with Bruce Sterling's work it's fairly hard science fiction and goes into some detail as to the effects that this might have. Specifically, the main group of characters are tornado chasers and through this you get to see the results of this problem. heir is a great deal of discussion about the causes of the storms, the destruction it causes, what the land is like during and after such occurrences and how the world reacts to things. In the Storm Troupers (as they call themselves) I could see many ideas for BP characters, and it's a great book for ideas of a environmentally devastated planet. The resulting politics are dealt with in bits and pieces throughout the book and there's also some references to medical research and genetic engineering that might prove useful in a game. Anyway, this is beginning to ramble a little but I thought some of you might find it interesting. I thoroughly recommend it. Absolutely agree. Heavy Weather is great fun. Supertornadoes! Illegal medical tech! Ornithopters! Malaysian smartjeeps! I could very well see it being an inspiration for World of Hurt campaigns. Presuming anyone _does_ run BP on Earth. > Anyway, this is beginning to ramble a little but I thought > some of you might find it interesting. I thoroughly > recommend it. The other Bruce Sterling book I've read, Holy Fire, is also neat. More philosophy and less action, looking at the transhuman condition from the point of view of a 90-year-old woman who undergoes radical life-extension therapy and goes ever so slightly unhinged as a result. It's set in a near-future gerontocracy where the world economy revolves around life-extension research. Really moving and yet humorous look at mortality and humanity. Also good for a new way to look at wealthy old Incorporate citizens pumping themselves up with Long John therapy. It actually had a story, for starters... The tech in the book was certainly cool, especially the grasshopper jeeps. With today's visual effects capabilities, HW is very doable, and it would likely be very successful. Ah, if only I were a movie exec... I would make that my second movie...right after BP, of course. ;-) - Fixer *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
