Well, that's a controversial topic. The original colonists attempted to allot homesteads and assign farm lots to each colonist. This plan met with only limited success, and during the Abandonment, the system broke down even further. Until recontact, land ownership was essentially meaningless, as there just were not enough people for it to matter. After recontact, things quickly began to change, but remain confused. Most of the land around the biggest settlements, Haven, Second Try, etc, was deeded to its original/current users by an early executive order of the the Office of Colonial Affairs. In theory, all unsettled portions of Poseidon were "left in trust for the benefit of humanity yada yada yada." In practice, for the less settled areas, like maybe Los Isolotes, the OCA issues homestead aggreements and colonial permits on a case by case basis. These more remote and unpolulated areas are what are now most at issue. Mining claims, native rights, natural heritage, etc, are all in conflict. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Westcape (Arch 103). Basically, if the land has a legal owner, the value is determined by demand, which is usually based on location (proximity to major settlements) or inherent resources (arable soils, minerals, etc). There is, as a result, tremendous variation in land value. I hope this does not add further confusion to the issue ; ). My question is this: Is anyone else currently running a campaign there? I would quite like to incorporate other peoples places, NPCs and ideas into the town as I visualise it. Any hints, tip or info would be greatly appreciated. I posted a longish note to the list about it a while back - regarding my use of Kai's Widow myth in the adventure. There might be some useful bits there. Archipelago has a lot of info on the place, and Oliviera's freedom fighters are a great source for story. There are even one or two ADs about the area in Access Denied. Oh yeah, the NPC from UC #5 (I know, I know - its coming!), Ramon Ortega, of Archipelago intro fame, is haunting about the place. He has fallen in with Oliviera and gotten emotionally involved - at least in my version of BP. Oh yeah, and all you Westcape natives should remember Grandma Chi (Chee) - a local matriarch, wrinkeled and wizened and full of spirit. The whole Westcape area is a hotbed of activity and adventure, and one of my favorite locales on Poseidon. From: Ml10@aol.com Sent: Sunday, August 01, 1999 5:30 PM To: blue_planet@lists.imagiconline.com Subject: [BLUE PLANET] - GPS Systems Hi All, From what I understand, the primary navigation tool in BP is the GPS system. With a little knowledge of how they work in the real world, GPS systems open a whole new avenue of adventures in the game. In the real world, a GPS receives calculates its possition bases on the movement of 3 to 4 orbiting satelites. The US DOD maintains ~24 GPS satelites in carefully monitored orbits. Each of these satelites transmites the time. Since a GPS receiver knows the orbits of the satelites, it compares the times that it receives from each satelite and computes its location based upon the deltas. One of the biggest problems with the GPS system is that the signals sent are very weak and easily blocked. Adventure Ideas: The GPS satelites and their support bases make prime targets for terrorists groups. As any disruption in the system would hurt GEO as well as Incorporate transporation. The disruption can be as simple as blowing stuff up or... the clocks could be altered on random satelites. (Remember, location is calculated based on difference in the times received. A tenth of a second is all that it would take.) The GPS receivers can be jammed or disruted by storms, leaving the characters lost in the wilderness. Imagine a device that can be attached to the outside of any transport. In has a GPS receiver built into it so that it can monitor where the craft is heading. Once land is out of site, the device begins to jam the GPS signals. But, instead of white noise, it transmits false information that causes the pilot to adjust his course for "drift". The device could keep this up until the craft ran out of fuel and crashes into the ocean. I wanted to know, what are the main themes and ideas you are developping in your campaign? How did you found those and what inspired you? I would really like to start one with a couple of friends but they are not very hot about it. I tried very hard to interest them to BP but I think they are fed up with RPG in general (when we play it's almost always Chronopia, a TTG, and on occasion Age of Renaissance). Do you have any suggestion as to how to bring them into BP? (I really tried hard, really). I will be waiting your input on this.
