What I understand of the studies, the FBI one was mentioned by Masaad Ayoob(sp) in one of his columns and that's all I've heard of it. It was duplicated by one of our local police departments and the results are startling. Only one officer "survived". The study starts with the officer with his/her gun in the holster, and the assailant with knife drawn or sheathed. What it breaks down to is that drawing and using a knife is a simple motor action. Drawing and using a gun is a complex motor action. Under stress complex motor actions break down, making them harder to complete. 2.) Mr. Sakal: about your training vs. guns/knives. I can understand survivng against a gun that's already drawn is very difficult prospect. We've done drills against knives, and that is also a difficult prospect. What style do you train in? 3.) As to the likelyness of colonists practising martial arts after a backbreaking day at work ... weren't the people who developed these arts under the same constraints? 4.) (This whole bit is a personal philosophy, and as such isn't very logical.) While a gun is a great equalizer for those with no fighting skills, it's also a one purpose tool. Guns come down to shoot/no shoot. It might be a good implement for intimidation, but once someone realizes you're not going to pull the trigger - it's useless. A knife can be used for a number of tasks, and although it might lack the intimidation factor - it can still be as dangerous. I've actually got v2 a lot earlier than expected, you must have shipped the thing pretty damn quick. Good show! The books are certainly very solid and have a definite 'quality' feel about them. I've only designed a few characters with the new system, so I can't really comment on that as yet. New aborigine info is good and if I was a new buyer getting the game for the first time, I would be so pleased with the sheer level of background and detail, especially the Moderators Guide which is just solid with detail. Combining Archipelago into the game was stroke of genius, I don't think I've seen many (if any) games with this level of background detail available from day 1. My only minor gripe (and this is purely personal) is that some of the new artwork isn't as good as I'd expected. Don't get me wrong, I don't have an artistic bone in my body and it's far, far better than anything I could do. It's just that I was a big fan of the work of Blair Reynolds and Brian Despain and I thought that their work captured the mood of the game perfectly. However, I do understand that there are numerous reasons why different artists etc would be used. I also kind of liked the equipment drawings from v1 (and the same style used in Undercurrents). The illustrations had a 'hard', technical look which was ideally suited to the game (one of my players, a total gun nut in games thought that the Peacemaker from Undercurrents was the coolest gun he'd ever seen in a game). Anyway, that's just my tuppence worth and I am fully prepared to be shot down in flames over this. Thank you for your forebearance. I can see this working for the Pacifica Archipelago, but would there be colonists who adopt a different lifestyle to better fit their local in a different island chain? I was thinking about colonists who may have traveled to the Southern Hope Chain and decided that a more norse lifestyle would be more appropriate given the closeness to the southern pole and it's colder climate. Right now it's just an idea I'm tossing around for a campaign I'm thinking of running there. Would put an interesting twist on the natives. Any thoughts on what these style natives would be like, or other lifestyles that could be adopted?
