Well, it's another hobby. The environment is also hostile for at least part of the year, no matter where you are in this state. In Southeast, for instance, you've got kayaking, sailing, hiking, etc. in the summer, when it's not been raining too long, and the Taku winds aren't blowing (100+ mph gusting winds). In the winter, which runs Oct - Mar, it alternately rains and snows, making it a pain to try planning anything (snowshoes & raingear required for any hike, and the like). I guess that sounds like a nasty picture, but my point is this: in the face of unpredictable, or hostile weather, you need some indoor hobbies, or you really get cabin fever. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. My wife and I recently went on a day-trip out to Tangier Island in the Chesapeake Bay, and it has sparked me to start thinking about my dormant BP campaign again. The island is reachable only by boat and plane/helicopter, and the local economy revolves around fishing and tourism. The people are uniformly friendly, and the island has a fairly rich history (it had been a fort for the British, as well as a major fishing port despite its relative isolation). With the problems of the Chesapeake fishing industry recent years, the island has turned to tourism and ecological work. The Chesapeake Bay fishing culture strikes me as a good source to draw upon for more recent emigrees to Poseidon: though they certainly are not 'high tech', they do have a healthy regard for the benefits of technology, but they are not afraid of hard physical work. My Tangier will have a small native village, along with a GEO-operated research & rescue outpost to give maximum plot possibilities, and certainly I'll be appropriating the map of the general area. I haven't decided where on the planet I'll be situating it, though I'm drawn for some reason to the more northerly latitudes, to allow me an excuse to work up stats for an uplifted Beluga whale (an obsession I've broached on the board before). I'll wait until I receive my care package from FFG later this week before starting serious research. A good basic intro to the island and its history can be found here: http://www.chesapeakebaysampler.com/TangierIsland.htm Also: I find myself watching the US cable channel Animal Planet a lot lately, and I find two shows especially inspirational for BP: CROCODILE HUNTER and EXTREME CONTACT. CROC HUNTER features Australian naturalist Steve Irwin, who is just this side of insane, in his role of working with animals (largely, but not solely, crocodiles) and trying to preserve them. What is interesting is his philosophy of not using any tranquilizers or chemicals when dealing with wild animals, which leads to some interesting material for his out-takes show, let me tell you. I could easily see Steve's great great great great grandson or daughter mucking about on Poseidon, tracking down stick monkeys or greater whites. EXTREME CONTACT is more directly related to BP's underwater focus. The show follows three divers who cruise the waters off Florida and the Carribean in search of marine life to film. They eschew scuba gear and its disturbing sounds in favor of snorkels, and though the show's narration rather obnoxiously plays up the (almost non-existant) "EXTREEEEME SPORTS!" aspects of their work, they manage to get pretty close to some nasty creatures like Moray Eeels and Silkie Sharks, and also got some excellent footage of a Whale Shark on one episode. MikeC, rambling on as always. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. Are you saying that there are a goodly number of role players in Alaska jsut no conventions? The Chesapeake Bay is a rich source of ideas for BP indeed. The classic YA novel "Jacob Have I Loved" by Katherine Patterson used it as the setting, which is where I first read about the area. I've only been there once, and I was only passing through. :( Also, I once set a Call of Cthulhu game on a Chesapeake Bay island: "The Colour Out Of Space" meets "Jacob Have I Loved." People who have actually read both of these might consider the idea a bit warped... There was a book about the Chesapeake Bay culture called "Beautiful Watermen" or something like that, wasn't there? Won the Pulizter Prize a long time ago? We get Animal Planet on Malaysian cable, although I haven't actually sat through a full episode of Croc Hunter. I'll have to keep an eye out for it now. I'm curious too, if that's true. It also depends a lot on where he's from. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
