Hey All, Earlier this spring there were some unfortunate complications with the cetacean book Ancient Echoes. In June, we started from scratch and the text is now almost complete. The final editing will start soon, and the intention is to slip AE into the production schedule after Black Crusade on the regular two month rotation. As I said, the writing is almost complete. The book contains a metric fishload of information for players and moderators on everything from cetacean biology and culture to Hydrospan history and the Church of the Whalesong. We introduce pilot whales, belugas and common dolphins as PCs and detail the legacy of genlift. There are rafts of info on primal and genlifted behavior, cetacean settlements, additional technology, communication and even fin humor. There is lots of advice and direction for more effective playing and moderating of cetaceans and telepresence. There are also rules covering various aspects of echolocation, whale cognition and fin specific skills, skill packages and professions. There will even be a fin specific character sheet. Though we are packing this book to its proverbial gills with this stuff and more, there is still a little room, and time, for some minor additions. We have included everything we could think of, but we want to make sure we include everything you want as well. To that end, if there is anything, especially the less obvious sorts of things, that any of you feel *must* be covered in the book echolo...er...speak now or forever hold your peace... Hey All, As a follow-up to my previous request for input for Ancient Echoes, I have a specific question. I am working on a section on cetacean combat tactics and am compiling a list of cool tactics, tricks and techniques fins can use to take advantage of their unique capabilities and environment. Does anyone have any good tricks or suggestions to offer? Thanks, Jeff Barber Biohazard Games *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. Cetacean humor - how it differs from human. What sort of jokes or panks a dolphin would play, particularly the young. What is the cetacean equivalent of "an Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman swam into a bar...." Taboos - what is beyond even discussion unless yoyu knew the individual really well. Concepts completely beyond the cetacean mind-set - what can thy simply not grasp due to the differences in paradigm? I would as for the converse, but would not understand the reply . --- BIOHZD@aol.com wrote: > Hey All, > > Earlier this spring there were some unfortunate > complications with the > cetacean book Ancient Echoes. Ram attacks as a form of melee fighting, then retreating quickly and ramming again. Fighting a sub, perhaps their echo location and instincts allow the to spot the weakest point to strike; a difference in the rebounding sound that only a fin could register. Sneak attacks. A natural ability to determine inversion layers, background noise etc, makes it far easier for a fin to sneak up. Use of sonics to disorient prey may come naturally. Millennia of manouvering in Pods may give some interesting techniques. Preventing the tracking of one individual; swimming manoevers that would fool sonar into into giving the wrong dopplar shift - probably others. If I think of any other ideas I'll post 'em. Dolphin chat-up lines. More seriously, I'd really like to get information on dolphins' opinions about the colonisation of Poseidon, the abandonment, Posiedon as the promised land (water, even) for cetaceans etc. As for cetacean combat - I suspect the big advantage fins would have would be stealth. They'd be hard to distinguish from normal wildlife. A fin vs a sub would be something like an infantryman vs a tank, I guess. Actually, one possibly cool idea might be taking natural dolphin hunting/fighting patterns and translating them into high-tech tactics...instead of ramming a shark in the gills, they target a sub's weak points with a torp in the same way... > Later, > > Jeff Barber Gar http://www.mytholder.f2s.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. Just short RPing advice that you can keep on a sheet next to you to remind yourself you're _not_ a monkey and you should act different. Just a few tidbits on psychology or behavior that players (new or not) can use to "enhance their roleplaying experience." :) Stuff like "point with your chin every now and then" or "nudge stuff" can add an element of humor to the game, and remind everyone that one character isn't human.
