Regardless of the facts in this particular instance (I have yet to read the actual reports), there *have* been multiple, documented cases in which Cousteau, and those working for him, *did* ecologically harmful and scientifically questionable things during the production of their films - running aground on coral reefs, staging animal behaviors, harming marine mammals, etc. Cousteau was an engineer turned filmmaker, and did not start out as an advocate for the oceans. He often felt compelled to push things to get the best footage and to create the greatest visual impact. Throughout his career he was always sensitive to the fact that audiences wanted to be entertained, not just informed. In fact, this was one of the reasons he was so successful. Though he made some ecologically dubious calls, Cousteau was truly sincere in championing the oceans, believing that the ends sometimes do justify the means. It is an undeniable fact that his efforts have served to educate millions about the wonders and value of the oceans, and to advance conservation efforts of every sort the world over. Cousteau and his Society are not perfect, but Biohazard chooses to support the Society in spite of its past mistakes, and because of the big picture. The Society has done the oceans *far* more good than it will ever do them harm, and it would be a tragic loss if Cousteau's legacy were to die with him. Hey All, Please forgive the self indulgent post : ). I once snuck into a lecture Cousteau was giving at MIT about the then-under-construction Alcyon. I had heard the negative press, and I was worried that the man would not live up to the legend I had grown up admiring. He turned out to be a charismatic and enthralling speaker, and by the end of the lecture I was convinced that he was as noble and dedicated as his public image. He also turned out to be extremely funny, with impeccable comedic timing - go figure ; ). Oh, and how many of you knew that Cousteau was essentially a polygamist too? He he...surprise!
