From: BIOHZD@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, September 19, 2000 7:19 PM To: blue_planet@lists.ient.com Subject: [BLUE PLANET] - Back online... Hey All, I am *finally* returned from my wandering travels and am back online. It has taken me some time to reintegrate myself in society : ), but I have finally waded through the "sargassum raft" of emails awaiting me. In no particular order... 1. As Jim pointed out, Undercurrents is not dead, just hiding below the surface, waiting to reemerge. As advertised, the next issue (#7), will be the hybrid issue, focusing on the biology and culture of the Silva, Cat, and Mongrel (a new hybrid species presented in FluMech) hybrid species. The issue's scenario takes place in Bright Savanna, and is an homage of sorts to "The Legacy of Heoret" by Niven and crew. It's called Grendel ; ). As Jim also mentioned, we *encourage* fan submissions, and in fact, our original intent was that the majority of UC's content would come from such submissions. Increased fan submissions would help regularize the release schedule for Undercurrents, and so here is your chance to contribute to the BP canon. Get a'writin' Newcomer... Those of you that have made submissions, they are in the pipeline, and awaiting fitting issues. With the change to themed issues this may take some time, so please be patient. To generate interest and more fitting submissions, I will be posting a list of upcoming, and possible, UC themes for the list's consideration. Watch this space... 2. There seem to be a few confusions regarding the "official" BP website. Biohazard and Fantasy Flight will be cross linking websites to facilitate continued online BP support and ordering. The Biohazard site will be undergoing some updates to V2 over the short term, but general content/development will remain unchanged. Our site (www.biohazardgames.com) will still be the place to find new goodies and news goodies for all things Blue Planet. 3. Regarding another apparent confusion, and just to make the relationship clear, here's a word about the Biohazard and Fantasy Flight deal. Biohazard has entered into an exclusive license deal with Fantasy Flight. Biohazard retains ownership of all things Blue Planet and has creative control over the RPG line. Biohazard is the production house, and FFG is the publisher. This is a great deal for both sides, giving BP the financial backing and distribution system it needs to grow. Our hope is that this partnership will allow BP to become the well-supported, well-known game line we all want it to be. 4. There have been various questions about converisons for V1 to V2 or back again. It is unlikely that we will be publishing any formal coversions for either system. There are a number of reasons for this and a couple stand out. First, the V2 system is not a revision of the system from V1. The two systems are so different that conversion would be rather arbitrary. Second, given that we are engaged in supporting V2 with a steady stream of new products, it does not seem like the best use of our time to work out, playtest, revise and publish conversions. That said, I would encourage any or all interested parties to work up conversion systems of their own. We would then be happy to post them on our website for access/use by those intending to continue on with V1. Sound fair? 5. We should have PDFs of the V2 Character Sheet up and available on the website ASAP - if it's not already there. (Hey Jimbo - Gregor can have his pick of the new rifles from FluMech if this gets done by Monday...he he he). 6. Not to bum out our more distant friends, but here is a special announcement for local BPers. We are going to be doing some local store/con demos over the next several months. This Saturday at 1pm, we will be at the Danger Room, here in Columbia, and on the 22nd of October we will be at Valhalla's Gate (the new game store), also here in Columbia. In early Novemeber we will be at Archon in St. Louis, along with FFG, running BP and disk game demos. Come say hey and play if you can. 7. I am offering additional muscle to Jim's post regarding list courtesy. I have been proud of (and touched by) how friendly and respectful this list has been during it's three year (wow!) history. This is our sandbox (or swimming hole as the case may be), and we make the rules. Play nice or face loss of subscription privileges - your choice. Well, that's it for now. Real life is calling, and as I've been ignoring it since July, its really frigging loud. More later, and individual responses to some of your questions and requests as I can make them. Later all and enjoy your exploration of V2. I'm glad you brought this up, because I've got a question on just this topic. I've been an official SJGames demo guy (we're called the Men In Black) for a while now, and I've seen first hand on how the MIB program really helps promote the SJGames product line. Each year, MIB's around the world run hundreds of demos at cons and stores, and expose thousands to SJGames products. Is there such an official program in the works for Blue Planet? I know FFG has a demo team for Diskwars (Flight Crew, I think it's called), but would that program cover BP? I'd be the first to sign up for something like this! - Fixer *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. They're pretty good, though as always, I would love to see more. Also, they were released before Gurps Biotech, which is almost a necesssity for the Blue Planet universe (finally! A chance to _use_ it!)--some little tweaks should be made to take it up to date. BP seems pretty easy to convert to Gurps. Assume a Tech Level of 9, with about a 10 in genetics and bioengineering. Most TL 9 equipment is usable. If you have Ultra Tech 2, you can even use the TL 8 caseless firearms listings in the back as weapons; just use the same stats and assume they are TL 9 binary propellant guns (I had a discussion with the author of UT2 on this). Power cells are similar, though I think that BP ones store only about 1/3 to 1/4 of the energy (have to check). The only thing I don't have, and can't fudge too well, is a list of the stats of the various critters on Poseidon. Anyone out there know if somebody else on the Net has done this, saving me the effort? Of course, I'm interested in what Fluid Mechanics will do to my Gurps-inspired slant on the Blue Planet universe... For me, this set of conversion rules is a good sign. A good game universe ought to be big enough to support a variety of systems--how many are there for Tekumel these days? The more adaptable Blue Planet is, the better a chance it will have for reaching a wide audience of gamers. I think it's well on its way. If said issue has already been posted, nevermind. My PC's were about to end up in Bright Savannah, so I decided to try this scenario on them. Jason, you'll be happy to know you're not the only one who thought of dropping hydrogen cells out of a hopper and blowing them up. But this time, the dam rolled better on its "save vs. hydrostatic shockwave" roll (like it could have rolled worse... It did still fail with an 80.) And the PC's had actually warned the town in advance and given them time to do some sandbagging. One of my players even made the connection to Halls of Heorot/Beowolf's Children..._before_ they discovered the big ones. (Of course, he didn't know he was right. That information was never really used.)
