Aczel Mathematician and author Aczel traces the history of the humble compass, which he describes as "the most important technological invention since the wheel." The device, he notes, "allowed goods to be transported efficiently and reliably across the seas and opened up the world to maritime exploration." Also a index of which book its detailed in. I know the index project is out therer but a simple equipment list is needed. The BIG thing about such a list is that it should be kept up-to date and that it should only reference OFFICIAL products. I used to use a wonderfull equipment listing for another system only to find that some of the stuff listed was homebrew, some existed only in on-line non-offical supplements etc.....completely useless for players. Speaking NOT as an official hat-wearer for Biohazard but rather as a computer professional and concerned party there are a couple of things I feel obliged to point out. Format is going to be critical. While I would like an excel file (I have Excel 95 at home and access to Excel 2k at work), as Dom pointed out not every has access to Excel or other office products. The alternative would (of course) be one of the generic formats, comma or tab delimited. One of the things you all might consider is a database table fronted by a web interface. With a cgi script of some sort parsing it in between. That would make searches pretty quick as well as making it more dynamic. However access during a game would be problematic. A good printout format option would almost be required. Also remember that all that information is copyrighted by Biohazard and FFG. So while creating it for personal use is one thing, creating and distributing it is another. And (of course) distributing it for profit is definitely a no-no (but I doubt anyone here would do that). I use a program called PC-Gen for keeping track of my D&D3rdEd characters and they're running into this sort of issue now. How much info on which books, how much text describing the item in question, etc. On the one hand you want to make it easy to use and useful, on the other you (or at least I do) want to kind of nudge people to buy the books. And we did have a weapons list in Access Denied, of course it's use is mitigated now since it is v1.0 and most of the numbers don't work. Also (speaking personally) I think that keeping out homebrew isn't necessarily a *good* thing. But rather a definitive marking of which items ARE official and which are player/GM generated is good. Cross pollination of equipment ideas is something I'd like to see more of. And I don't mean to discourage anyone from doing this I just don't want anyone to get in trouble with Greg or Jeff. Tab-spaced text files would work, or even tables in HTML. If anyone that does any programming for Excel, in MS or not, has any real grey matter, they'll have an Excel<->HTML Table converter somewhere. And again, I can host any such files on my own website. http://www.chalz.net/bp/ > ----- Original Message ----- > From: > To: > Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2001 7:53 PM > Subject: RE: [BLUE PLANET] - Equipment List > > > > > > I can do one pretty easily, I was just hoping someone already had one. > > > > I'll probably use Excel if that is a good choice for everyone. > > > > Rusty > > > > > *************************************************************************** > > To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com > > with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. > > > > > > *************************************************************************** > To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com > with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. > *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
