( I also think that it is the best GURPS Traveller book to be published yet. ) Some of my favorite campaigns have been where the characters were traders. Poseidon is a place where the forces of mass production have not yet taken hold. Poducts are not always available at any price. If you were on a HIST field study in Nowhere, how much would you pay for a roll of toilet paper? or parts to repair your jump craft? or some beer? The black market is present, what do they trade in? A black market is not only for illegal goods, but for goods you can not aquire through normal channels (mostly because the black market stole them). Imagine some black marketeers making off with a shipment of toliet paper. It is a virtually untracable product that is in high demand. ...Hmmm.... I just thought of the next case that my players will be investigating. The first Traveller game I was ever in, we were the crew of a tramp freighter. It was great buying and selling cargo, trying to figure out what was the best thing to sell on each planet. The driving forces behind each trip were the challenge and the sense of adventure. Gurps: Far Trader takes all of that away and turns it into columns of boring, stagnant numbers. It takes all of the guesswork and character interaction, and reduces it to a dice roll. No fun. It read like an >economics textbook. It's the worst Gurps: Traveller book. I agree. GURPS: Far Trader was so dry that I couldn't even leaf all the way through it. I think a trade group is a good idea for a team of PCs, but the finances of running such an operation are terribly boring for a significant percentage of role players. Some information about Poseidon's commerce and industry would be helpful. Perhaps a few pages in either a law enforcement, crime, or colonization sourcebook. I once ran a Shatterzone game in which the party were traders. I couldn't do anything to get their mind off of trading. They enjoyed speculating on the markets and making the deal go down. I had to pull rules from Star Frontiers and Star Wars : Tramp Freighters in order to handle everything in a somewhat believable fashion. So when I look at GURPS : Far Trader, I see exectly want I needed to make my life easier all those years. I'd like to see a book for BP that covers the same ground as Far Trader, Merchant Princes, Tramp Freighter, Knight Hawks, ect... *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
