Looked through the books and found flash grenades and confounders. I'm looking for something that would allow a group to move a decent distance without being spotted by someone using night vision. *-*-*-*=*=*=*=*-*-*-* Chad Chirhart seahawk@visi.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. I was considering a hovercraft APC, because it's something that player characters may conceivably encounter, especially if they're working for or against GEO. I've come up with a simple concept sketch: http://www.primusnoir.f2s.com/bob/geoapc.jpg I've tried to base the design on some real life APCs. The problem is they all have a tendency to look distressingly similar, especially if they have no wheels or tracks. To make things worse, I have to keep it pretty simple, otherwise no one will go to the effort to make a paper model. The main gun has been exaggerated. I was planning to make it somewhat smaller; it's an APC, not an MBT. Seeing as this list is pretty much the target audience, I thought I'd ask your opinions. Should I go ahead, or work on something a little more stereotypically SF? This depends entirely on what kind of sensor the group is trying to evade. The methods of countering the main kinds of sensor used in blue planet are:- If the night vision equipment is just low-light (cat's eye), anything that avoids normal vision will avoid it, ie any phototropic gear. If they are up against infrared thermal imaging (as seen in the film "Predator"), then the Intrusion Suit (Fluid Mechanics p25) is the thermal equivalent. Giving a surface a suitably "textured" coating (possibly even a smart, morphing one) would break up a sonar signature, and anything that contains no ferrous metal will have a low radar signature. Any or all of these methods could be combined. Note that some of these have never been mentioned in the Blue Planet books, but the advantage of a hard SF universe is that scientific knowledge from the real world can be used in it. The important thing to bear in mind is that there is no sensor that a countermeasure cannot be developed for... And no "stealth" technology that a sensor cannot be designed against. An arms race between the two exists in the real world, and presumably in the BP universe too. Not bad. though you might want to check out the hovercraft used by the USA during the Vietnam conflict and give it a somwhat lower, boat-like, profile. >The main gun has been exaggerated. I was planning to make it somewhat >smaller; it's an APC, not an MBT. This is not a bad thing: given that the GEO is continually strapped for cash (especially on Poseidon), it is reasonable that they'd probably use AIFV's rather than APC's, so the heavier weapon is not out of place. A little military terminology for the group: an APC is an armoured vehical for the transport of infantry in combined arms operations. It is generally very lightly armoured and armed (no more than a couple of machine guns). It is basically an armoured taxi to carry infantry units into and out of battle. An AIFV is an armoured vehical designed to transport an infantry squad into combat and act as close support. They are usually armed with heavier weapons (the US Bradley AFV has a 25mm gun and a dual TOW launcher as well as a .50 cal M2 machine gun) as well as gunports to allow the squad to fire from the protection of the vehical. >Seeing as this list is pretty much the target audience, I thought I'd >ask your opinions. Should I go ahead, or work on something a little more >stereotypically SF? For myself: I have a collection of Micro Machine toys that I will use as miniatures during my BP games, including a whole lot of current military vehicals.
