The US Marines still operate a few but on nothing like the scale the Russians do. This counter acts passive infrared spotting. The thing also has a active charcol liner which helps mask sent. Coupled with 'sentless' toiletrys and a number of 'natural sent' packs the suits provide protection against animal or mechanical sent tracking devices. It has a radar absorbing/stealth material built in to help provide protection vs battle field surveilance rader. I guess weapons etc also require a covering of same. The ghillie suit itself of course covers the visual aspect..its great cammo. Of course stealth and patience are the snipers great allies and all the tech is just a help...without that the suit wont help a jot. Well, with technology at least. Not actually true in the BP universe... The Matador Suit (Fluid Mechanics p26) and Phototropic Gear are specifically designed to evade this. Also, since this is about night vision, the mk1 eyeball isn't going to be that much use anyway! *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. I hope you aren't violating any special security issues here - I'd hate to have your presence mysteriously vanish from the list ;) Still, this is pretty wild sounding. Seems to be the ultimate for the silent and still user. Which brings me to a related question - what about sound? Maybe this was covered and I missed it, but aside from deafening the target, is there some sort of sound dampening equipment aside from cotton balls? --Charles (not all that militarily oriented - could you tell?) > Other stuff:- > Royal Marine Snipers are currently using a Ghillie Suit (this is a 'walking bush suit' , these have been use for ages for ultimate cammo) with technological extras built in:- > Heat Sinking....the suit doesnt vent heat as a normal body does but dumps it into a series of heat sinks that can be angled away from your target or into sinks stuck in the ground. For instance, not having all that much ocean access for incoming orbital capsules. I think the hovercraft, in BP, would be of more use in island chain hopping than in the general world - sit out on the ocean when your bag is popped and let's see what happens then. Might make for interesting, and somewhat daring, smuggler craft - faster than a regular boat actually in the water, won't show up in higher altitude radar, and can easily cross onto the shore. Not sure of the noise rating when compared to a VTOL - probably less? -C > >Not bad. though you might want to check out the hovercraft used by > >the USA during the Vietnam conflict and give it a somwhat lower, > >boat-like, profile. > > Also go look at the Russians Hovercraft:- The Ruskies have a real THING for these beasts and have never stoped playing with them.....in the West we've pretty much dumped the concept. Good point about the russian tech, though. My favourite Russian invention is the Ekranoplan, known to BP players as the "Ground Effect Plane." They actually built one of the beasts, dubbed "the Caspian Sea Monster," and you wouldn't believe that something the size of a jumbo jey fuselage could cross the caspian sea in 45 minutes at sea level... Amazing fuel efficiency, too. I've always wondered what an interceptor version would be like, skimming the sea just short of MACH with an exocet or sea tiger missile on each wing... Another point to consider is that Russians tend to build for reliablity rather than performance, so the tech used on poseidon is more likely to be decended from Russian designs than western ones!
