A lot of rotary wing development was done by Russians...some of whom left for the US. Sikorsky for example. The Russians have developed some great stuff...often not as 'High Tech' as the West but often highly practical and effective. Look at their Helicopter Gunships for example. You have to get used to the Russian ideas on multiple redundancy rather than fail safe, and that they plan round life expectancy better than the West.....why build a fighter to last 15 years and 100,000's of flight hours if in combat its life expectancy is less than 24 hours? Build 5 cheaper ones and throw them away when needed. My favorite example of the difference is:- "NASA spent millions developing the 'Space Pen', which would write perfectly in zero-gravity or underwater.....the Russians used a pencil' Different design philosophys is something nations and corps would have and makes their gear distinctive. ------------------------------------------------ Global WebMail - Delivered by Global Internet www.global.net.uk ------------------------------------------------ *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. I must admit I'm speculating about stealth weapon coverings. If it exists it may be classified...but I dont know anything real. There was even a article about the new suits on my Local TV a few years ago...SW UK is dominated by a number of large naval bases and the Dartmoor Training grounds. I dont know how much use stealth anti-radar gear is for your average foot soldier...but using small band radar for fixed site security has been around for a number of years...you can buy it from Tandy/Maplins if you have the Home Office paperwork in the UK. Primitive but more usefull than IR based burgler alarms. On the Battlefield survelience radar IS used for recon/intel work.....JointStar being the most famous example (US airborne system used during the Gulf War to track troop movements). There have been persistant stories of Russian Satalite based radar systems as well. DomT In reply-to blue_planet@lists.ient.com on Tue Oct 9 11:05:09 2001 > This is some impressive material, Dom. They showed a really cool floating drone with a camera, a 6 inch radio controled plane with a camera, some new engines, etc. Not sure what the name of the program was. One thing I have run across is that there are a couple of items in the Player's Guide and Fluid Mechanics that have different information- Vehicle Armor in the Player's Guide costs 10000cs per +1 armor rating. In Fluid Mechanics it is listed as 5000cs per +1 armor rating. Also, the cybernetic eyes in the two books are drastically different, 13000cs in PG and 3500 in FM. In the gear list we are working on, I have both pairs listed but I put a note that they don't agree with each other. I recall an episode of a show on Wings which dealt with unique Russian designs in aircraft and such, including turboprops on the Bear, the cheap and yet high performance Fulcrum, and the Ekranoplan. I just didn't recall what the name of the vehicle was. I was impressed by the footage they showed. The show might have been something like "Frontiers in Flight"; there's also "On the Horizon" which discusses coming tech. *mmmcomanche...* > > Rusty > > *************************************************************************** > To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com > with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. > *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. Don't forget the variability of the Mark 1 Eyeball too. While the majority of people do not see as well in the dark there's always the odd one who can see clearly in very low light conditions. And there's always one of them on guard when you are trying to sneak past :-( Movement, as someone pointed out, is another dead giveaway. I once avoided notice (lord alone knows how) standing on a straight forest path which the squad happened to be crossing as one of the 'enemy' stood gazing down it... just by freezing in position until he got bored and went away! Experienced sentries will explore and examine the area in which they are to take post, checking where bushes, etc., are. Then if they see a dark shape in the 'wrong' place, they know something is up even if it doesn't move while they are looking at it, doesn't have the right shape for a person or whatever. I could go on for ages (used to instruct in camouflage and concealment, fieldcraft, etc. :-) Hugs and kisses, Mexal. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
