They were attempting to build an even bigger transport version which I think was called Spesatyl, although I can't be sure. There were smaller troop transport/attack ekranoplans such as the Orlyonok. None of them are now in working order. Shame about that, really. Mexal's points gives you a idea of the difference between trying to sneak up on a bunch of thugs and skilled experienced professionals. A simmilar result will of course occur if you try and sneak into the home turf of experienced woodsmen....although they may not be initialy as alert if not expecting trouble they will have expert knowledge of their ground and as good hunters will be very attuned to local noise levels etc. If those pro's or locals have had advanced warning or chance to prepare their defense they will be pure hell to try and sneak up on. Alertness is key. Maintaining it is hard, especially for days or weeks at a time with no 'action'. I imagine that BP natives might well maintain a VERY high level of alertness 'in the bush' and possibly post sentrys near their villages due to the hostile nature of their enviroment. In war-zones facing GEO/Incorp troops sneaking up on them will be for elite units only. >Throw a rock at it, or fire a round or two in its direction. Bushes and >rocks don't flinch. I learned that one playing paint ball. Recon by Fire. Hmmm. It works as long as you dont mind giving away your position or the possibility of return fire. Esp if you're wrong. Plus loosing all your night vision if you're weapon has a flash and waking your mates up and setting of the entire bushes animal life! I Imagine Incorp types will be using this a lot vs natives....... What works in Paintball/Airsoft doesnt always work very well IRL tactical situations. ------------------------------------------------ Global WebMail - Delivered by Global Internet www.global.net.uk ------------------------------------------------ *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. In fact I agree with all the disadvantages you listed. It seems to be the sort of tactic that would be used by green troops alone in the bush. And very likely to lead to panic in the camp. "Hey! Joe's shooting at something! We're under attack! Get 'em!" As for paintball vs IRL, it's been a long time since I saw grass that would stop bullets the way it stops paint *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. There are airsoft replica's of Pulse rifle's etc so Airsoft LARP BP is possible. Although not 'night vision' per se, I find that when standing post at night both hearing and in particular scent comes in useful. I have before now been able to point out to others the precise location of a fox... because I could smell him :-) The recruits in question didn't believe me either, until the fox poked his nose out of the hedge! Staying quiet and concealed is a good trick. If those attempting to come into area don't even know you are there, they are often less cautious and will give themselves away. And, if they don't know you are there they won't try out their 'silent kill' techniques on you :-) Reconnaisance by fire is not a good idea unless everybody is aware that both parties are in area and just want to check precisely where the opposition is. Even rock-hurling is not recommended. Bit of a give-away, rocks don't usually come flying through the air without someone propelling them! As I've been noodling on things to throw into my long-incubating BP campaign (set in an aquacultural cooperative way down among the Skyscraper Reefs), I've been thinking about the ESP biomod. Granting that psionic powers, as such, don't exist in the BP universe (at least, not in a reliable form), I was thinking about how to actually simulate telepathy. One thread that I hope to include in my game is research by LavOrg into an improved ESP modification that would allow the recipient to 'tap into' different areas of a target brain. It would be a very expensive and time-consuming mod (still experimental), and would require the implantation of special electro-chemical receptors on the tips of the fingers connected directly to the brain. The idea is that the telepath would have to touch the target's skull (sort of like the Vulcan Mind Meld from STAR TREK) and thus be able to pick up the synaptic impulses and interpret them. I figure that the process would not be completely fool-proof: the biological receptors can't have much resolution (not yet, anyway), and the telepath would probably only pick up impulses from the general area they were touching (IE, if they were touching the frontal lobe, they'd pick up intellectual thought, if they were touching the back of the skill, they'd pick up visual impressions, or subconscious urges, etc.), and the telepathic link would only be strongest if the telepath were touching bare skin. The receptors would inhibit the telepath's abilty to use their hands, being overly- sensitivem and prone to damage (they'd have to wear thick gloves a la the B5 Psi Corps, otherwise they'd suffer excruciating pain). I haven't thought up extensive game stats as of yet, since this will be more of a plot device than an available modification, but I wanted to pass it on the group for critique. I will close with a semi-serious question for discussion: Why would ANYONE uplift a PARROT? MikeC, really, I have a reason for asking...... *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
