If they DID speculate that the abos could control minds, they would probably keep it VERY secret and go an a BIG aborigine hunt (to no avail). If it got out there would be disbelief, maybe a panic, but unlikely anyone could do anything about it. Probably just be added to the mythology of the abos. --- Chris Stilson wrote: > That reminds me of something I was planning to ask; what if another > dead > aborigine floated ashore into an Incorporate compound, and the > Incorporate > studied it and found a way to synthesize the mind-altering chemicals > it > secretes? Since it is basically indicated that the aborigines are _very_ careful about what happens to the corpses of their comrades, I can see the sudden and unexpected disappearance of an incorp facility, either in total, or at least a large chunk, assuming they can even get the corpse there in the first place. If the GM were to allow this to happen, there is the question of the condition of the corpse. It would have to be very fresh, or fast fungus, or the toxins used to remove it from the corpse might very well destroy or corrupt the organs and trace chemical chains that give the aborigines these unique abilities in the first place. Then, there is always the possibility that the given corpse had no reserves of these chemicals in it's system after it died, either due to natural breakdown, or simply that it consumed them all in trying to preserve its own existence in the first place. Without these, the organ(s) that produce them would be fairly useless on a corpse; A living entity would be needed, and these things definately don't like being taken alive. As a GM, I would probably avoid this sort of occurrence if at all possible. I would probably stop short of wiping out the entire party of PCs to prevent the corpse from reaching a lab facility, but there are plenty of methods at the GM's disposal to keep all of those wonderful and nasty chemicals out of the hands of PCs. So far as an incorporate entity getting ahold of these chemicals, I can see them becoming ground zero for every form of espionage, sabotage, and open warfare tactic the other incorp states could throw at them to prevent them from gaining an overwhelming economic advantage. This is, of course, assuming that it doesn't take them 50 years of research to discover the mechanisms, chemicals, and their effects. Finding a nifty new chemical compound is one thing; fully understanding the process of its manufacture, and all of its effects is quite another. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. It would be surprising to find out they had continued it since most sources seem to indicate that the energy lost due to various effects (blooming, attenuation, dissipation due to particles in the air, etc) makes it inefficient. > Also, what do you mean by a particle beam? Particle weapons usually fire some sort of highly energetic (usually sub atomic) particle in a stream. AFAIK. If someone has more detailed information, share. However, I do know that the USAF attempted to get a laser system airborne by fitting the laser, the generators and the associated tracking systems into a 747 and using it as an ASAT system. I don't think it was a great success given the (relatively) primitive nature of laser weapons systems. As far as I am aware (and I'm by no means a scientist) a particle beam inflicts damage against a target by 'firing' atomic (or subatomic) towards the target. Damage is caused by the impact of particles travelling at relativistic speeds, heat generated as a by-product and radiation. For a much more techical and lengthy description of particle beams as weapons, I would direct you to: http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/airchronicles/aureview/1984/jul-aug/roberds.html Quite a substantial artcile on the basics of particle beams by someone who really knoew what they are talking about. I'm not sure about the feasibility of such a beam or its cohesion (why it doesn't crack the atoms/molecules of the medium it travels through, I don't know), but it would certainly make a great McGuffin for an Incorporate research product. > For a much more techical and lengthy description of particle beams as > weapons, I would direct you to: > > http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/airchronicles/aureview/1984/jul-aug/roberds.html > > Quite a substantial artcile on the basics of particle beams by someone who > really knoew what they are talking about. neat-o indeed. - kabael - Kintaro Oe - Derek the Guder - kabael@softhome.net - ICQ# 24193592 the McGuffin Group - the End Times - RPG Action - the Thirteenth Legion "Smiling fishee please don't attack me" - Steven Martini, "Corduroy Penis" *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
