In my opinion one of the biggest chunks of an individuals world view is their take on religion. So far in Blue Planet we've seen a pretty good representation of the new and modified versions of religions that exist in the game world. I especially love the whale song & NRM (rastafarinism was a perfect choice for this game). But what about your average Joe Colonist? How does s/he view the world around them. Obviously The Blight would have had a HUGE impact upon human spiritual views. From what I've infered from the game so far it seems that the blight acctually helped unify and strengthen the Catholic Church, but what about the protestant faiths and non-Christian traditions? The following are a few brief thoughts I've had so far, I'd love to hear other suggestions and comments, especially on the areas I haven't gotten around to yet. The first big question that poped into my head on this subject regarded Islam. Is the IUR a Suni or Shite state? My guess is that the two branches would HAVE to make peace (somehow) or come to terms with some form of hybridization of the denominations. In Eastern Asia I would expect that the traditional faiths have remained basically unchanged, and if anything would only be stronger. Hey, these folks have gone through so much in the past I doubt even The Blight could shake their belifs. In Europe & North America I think there would be a pretty stark divide between the safer developed areas and the wastelands. I see the Urban regions as being largly secular, but would also contain a healthy amount of liberal protestantism. I think that the wastelands would be dominated by religious folks, but they wouldn't be nearly as optomistic and socialy friendly. This is where you'd see a lot of genetic purity folks and churchs about as friendly as old school Calvanists & Puritans. As far as the Catholic Church goes I'm playing them as being radically different from what we've seen in the past. The brief blurbs in the moderator's guide leads me to see them as socially progressive and genuinly interested in scientific investigation. Anyone else been working on anything similar to these lines? I kinda liked it. It was useful and helped a lot when designing new characters; it kept notekeeping to a minimum. Maybe its just me, but I would have liked to see it in BPv2. I think I will just have to make it myself. Except for this little complaint, I have to say that BPv2 is exactly what an RPG should be: chokefull of useful background information, intelligent writing, interesting, excellent system, rich background. And for the first time, a truly useful player's guide. What I mean here is that the way the information is spread across both books make a for player's guide that is exactly that: a book with everything needed to play, from rules to background. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Nelson Lamoureux haver@sympatico.ca le_barbare_erudit@yahoo.ca ArM Code 1.2 4+ R+ H+ L T- SG++ G++ Y10 C-- FZ-- P+ HoH(B F+ Q) CD ------------------ «Boire sans soif et faire l'amour en tout temps, Madame, il n'y a que ça qui nous distingue des autres bętes.» Beaumarchais *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message. My guess is they just figured the BP logo looked so nifty they'd leave it on there first, and put the actual book title up above it in that heading font (I think it's called Serpentine). Not to my taste- probably one of the few things about BP that isn't. ____________________ Necromancer Bob, placing his Avestite action figure to be chasing Megakabuterimon around (he's an Ascorbite, ya know).... Heh. Okay, there have been several questions about this issue, so I reckon I'll address it briefly. Basically, when the graphic designer put together the look of the v2 books, he was thinking about how they look on the shelves, and specifically how they represent the Blue Planet brand, not just how they look when you're holdin' 'em in your hands. We wanted the BP covers to have a very distinctive look, so when customers saw them on the store shelf, they instantly recognize them as Blue Planet. Pinnacle did a great job with this with the Deadlands line -- you see that fiery orange cover, and you know instantly what you're looking at. The same holds true for WW's Storyteller books, and WotC appears to be doing something similar with the D&D line. Now, retailers have various ways they can shelve an RPG book. If all our books are shelved with the cover out for all to see, that's great. But it doesn't happen all that often. Typically, as you will no-doubt know from your regular trips to the game store, they're shelved in a book rack, one behind the other. A lot of times, all you'll be able to see is the top third or so of the book. Pinnacle responded to this recently by putting the title logo at the top of the book and the Deadlands logo at the bottom. We didn't agree with this move, figuring that Deadlands was the brand name that should jump out at the browser, not the name of whatever supplement it was. We finally decided on the BP approach, with the Blue Planet logo prominent and the title of the supplement in a more subdued font across the top. I really like it, and the retailers I've spoken to seem to think it's effective as well. Probably more than needed to be said on the matter, but I thought it might be interesting to some folks. And, of course, I realize it's ultimately a matter of taste, so you have my sympathies if it's not to your liking. ;) Greg Benage FFG *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe blue_planet' as the body of the message.
