When I described BP to my housemate she thought it sounded a lot like Joan Slonczewski's "A Door Into Ocean"- people on a water world, with high levels of biotechnology, deal with an invasion from a nearby planet that wants to develop their happy little planet. I also have a Sharkman figure I've been wanting to kitbash into something, although he really doesn't look like anything from BP (unless it's a *seriously* overmutated squid). -Necromancer "Frozen Fish Sticks!" Alison Sinclair - Blueheart(*) - seems pretty close to Blue Planet to me: Backpage blurb - 'Blueheart is at a crucial point in its history. The adaptive humans who have colonised the planet, covered in the main by ocean, are at the limit of their usefulness and the debate on the desireability of further terraforming is becoming heated. The discovery of a corpse deep beneath the sea is nothing unusual - there are natural predators in these seas as there are in any ocean - but for Rache and Daven, who discover the body, it is the catalyst for a tragedy of global proportions, for betrayal that turns mother against son, brother against brother.' Other similarities - the colonisation is run by four committees - survey, development, resources and Adaption. The latter (Adaption Oversight Committee or AOC) is responsible for the genetics programmes, and has direct influence on the pastorals (adaptives that have gone native) and adaptives. Star Travel is STL. Computer technology involves implants etc for interfaces. It reminds me a lot of Blue Planet. Blue Planet is vibrant and exciting, and Blueheart is less interesting than a cricket match. I tried to read it 3 times, and it put me to sleep. I really wanted to like it. It didn't help. Read Starfish by Peter Watts. It's far superior to Blueheart. In my opinion, of course. http://www.sfwa.org/members/Watts/main.htm There was a discussion of these books a while back. Nah, I don't think it's the degree. For some reason, Fluid Dynamics just sounds cooler...admittedly, Mechanics makes more sense for the sourcebook name.
