From: Malcolm Craig [malcolmcraig@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, November 21, 1999 11:43 AM To: blue_planet@lists.imagiconline.com Subject: [BLUE PLANET] - Westcape In response to the short discussion about Westcape, heres some stuff from my campaign. More should follow, when I get around to it. PEOPLE IN PERDITION This contains a few of the major NPC's for my campaign set in and around Westcape. A lot of the action has been centred on Perdition, so almost everyone on this list is based in that town. There are also a couple of short Access Denieds and a Colonial Times article at the end of the section. Jason Corrigan, rogue shocktrooper: Corrigan has come to a crossroads in his life. As one of the Peacekeepers elite shocktroopers, Corrigan was a symbol of the GEO's protective might. As the recipient of the latest Mark VI modifications, he was on the cutting edge of military technology. However, as part of the secret cadre of Mark VI shocktroopers assigned to Dyfedd, he heard vague rumours of the atrocities committed by Hanover. Acting on long suppressed feelings, Corrigan went AWOL. During a training exercise on Westcape, Corrigan disappeared. He is now holed up in Perdition, trying to make contact with the native resistance and trying to avoid any GEO investigators that may come poking around. See Access Denied: Rogue Trooper at the end of the NPC's section for more on this. Age: 29 Height/Weight/Build: 6' 1"/110kg/Muscular Eyes: Blue, alert Hair: Black, short, straight Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Freedom/Compassion/rebellious Nemo Kanzawe, Artisan and former mate of the 'Island Queen': Deeply loyal to Tukanu, he shares his friend's grief over the loss of the 'Island Queen' (see section on Tukanu for more on this) and is helping him every way he can to build a new vessel. His desire to help the resistance is tempered by the love that he has for his four children. He fears for what may happen to them and the entire community, should things get out of control in Westcape. In everyday life, his skills are in great demand and he is a popular figure around the town. Age: 30 Height/Weight/Build: 6' 4"/125kg/Muscular Eyes: Hair: Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Love/Loyalty/Disciplined Valentina Kiriakov, Bodyguard: Born and raised in the Mikoyan Circum-Jovian Manufacturing Zaibatsu, in her late twenties, Kirakov succumbed to a latent wanderlust and headed out for the Serpentis Belt. Finding little to interest her there, she headed down the gravity well, something that her fellow belters saw as nothing short of insanity. However, she was always prepared for this and had kept herself in top physical shape, her spacer biomod and various other modifications keeping her bones and muscles strong. As a former member of the MCJMZ Militia, her martial training kept her in employment in the rough and tumble of the frontier world. Now nearly forty years old, she is beginning to seek the quieter side of life and has bought a small patch of land on the edge of Perdition. Unfortunately, the situation with Hanover has blown up and she finds her skills in great demand in the newcomer section of town. A belter at heart, she values independence highly and is seriously thinking about taking up arms with the natives, if they will let her. Age: 39 Height/Weight/Build: 5' 6"/75kg/stocky, powerful Eyes: Blue, serious Hair: Black, cropped Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Contentment/Curiosity/Indifferent Dezmir Malkewicz, Hanover Industries Local Liaison Officer: It comes as a shock to many who deal with him to find that Dezmir Malkewicz, the most senior Hanover figure in Perdition is a mere 23 years old. Something of a prodigy, he spent the first four years of his life on Earth before his parents volunteered to be part of the Hanover effort on Poseidon. Aged 15 he returned to Earth to attend University in Zurich, gaining an honours degree in Business & History in three years. Ever since, he has been groomed and prepared for high office in the Incorporate State. Perdition is a tough test of his cunning and intellect, if he can be successful here then he can overcome any obstacle. His intelligence is formidable and natural skill impressive. The only thing that could prove to be his downfall is his relative inexperience. Many older and wiser heads within Hanover were dead set against his appointment and it was they who had Major Erika Weiss assigned as his 'advisor'. Should he make a mistake, many fear that Weiss could just as easily become his executioner. Age: 23 Height/Weight/Build: 5'7"/50kg/slim Eyes: Green, cunning Hair: Shoulder length, black, well groomed Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Power & Wealth/Duty/Confident Leroy Masabate, fish farm owner: Owner of a large fish farm a kilometre south of Perdition, Leroy was a quiet, homely man until a few months ago. His change into a rabid hater of newcomers, the incorporate and the GEO came about when HSS Troopers arrested his son, Jamal, as a suspected terrorist. Leroy now knows nothing of his whereabouts and repeated enquiries to the GEO and to Hanover has fallen on deaf ears. Hatred for Hanover boils inside him. His family and friends fear for his safety and he becomes more and more aggressive towards newcomers, whether they be allied with Hanover or not. Age: 49 Height/Weight/Build: 6'0"/76kg/Average Eyes: Brown, burning with inner rage Hair: Bald Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Revenge/Hatred/Manic Greg Mindoru, teacher: Chastised by Orisi Qalomaiwasa (Arch 120) on several occasions for trying to encourage the children in the school to actively fight against Hanover, Mindoru is an idealist who wishes for his people to throw off the perceived shackles of Incorporate domination. A proud man, he sometimes seethes that Oiliviera did not pick him to be one of his guerrilla fighters. However, his weak constitution would be a hazard in the depths of the jungle. Age: 29 Height/Weight/Build: 5'11"/70kg/Average Eyes: Slate grey, fiery Hair: Dark brown, short Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Revolution/Pride/Co-operative Tom Mindoru, apprentice healer: Apprentice to Miranda Muir and twin brother of Greg Mindoru, Tom is much more laid back. Indeed, he is mostly unconcerned about the struggle in Westcape. This attitude has earned the antipathy of many in the community, but he sees it as a situation where he lacks any skills or knowledge that would do much good in the struggle. Deep down, he is scared that he might be forced to get into a situation that may bring him into harms way. Age: 29 Height/Weight/Build: 5'11"/70kg/Average Eyes: Slate grey, disinterested Hair: Dark brown, short Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Contentment/Fear/Disinterested Miranda Muir, native healer: Respected by most of Perdition, Muir is still considered a little odd by native standards. Her propensity to put people to sleep with strange herbal brews is only one aspect of this. Her wearing of a (very tatty) white coat over her sarong is another. This all seemed to occur after she went to Dyfedd to sit medical exams she had been studying for for years over CommCore. She is now both a skilled healer and a qualified doctor, even if she is considered more than a little mad. Age: 46 Height/Weight/Build: 5' 10"/75kg/slightly plump Eyes: Green Hair: Brown, shoulder length Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Altruism/Compassion/Holistic Louisa Ngu, Native Patrol officer: Aged 34, Ngu is the senior officer among Perdition's three strong Native Patrol presence. A native Westcaper, she is fiercely loyal to the town of Perdition and the natives who live there. However, she is by no means stupid and avoids getting drawn in to the crime of the newcomer part of town. She is a trim, elegant figure, and just a shade under six feet tall. Her main concern is trying to stop her fellow residents from causing trouble with the newcomers. She wants the newcomers to have no excuse for committing crimes against the natives. Age: 34 Height/Weight/Build: 6' 0"/67kg/Slender Eyes: Brown Hair: Black, short, curly Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Justice/Loyalty/Holistic Vivianna Sandura, artisan: Considered something of a beauty by the young native men of Perdition, Vivianna is a very lively, energetic young lady. Her family are close friends with the Kanzawe family and Nemo (see above) guides her in becoming a skilled artisan. Her skills in fashioning wood are already great and she maintains a small workshop where she makes all manner of furniture and ornaments. Any young man who treated her badly would not only have to deal with her family but also with the formidable Nemo, not the most pleasing prospect in the world. Age: 19 Height/Weight/Build: 5'7"/55kg/Slim Eyes: Blue Hair: Fair, shoulder length Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Contentment/Professionalism/Co-operative Vasily Suvaroff, rubbish collector: A familiar figure in both the native and newcomer parts of town, Suvaroff is considered something of a harmless eccentric. He tours the town in a battered all-terrain truck (which he apparently built himself) collecting non-biodegradable rubbish. The natives have accepted him quite well, the newcomers less so. Having become so busy, he now charges 1 GCU per week to collect rubbish from people. Anything non-toxic is uplifted and taken away to Suvaroffs house on the edge of town to be sorted and graded. Much of the stuff is reused; none is burned or buried. Under his eccentric exterior, Suvaroff is a relatively skilled technician and builds a lot of stuff from the rubbish he collects. Many native fishermen have seen the advantages of his net floats, constructed from expanded foam covered by a casing of melted and reformed scrap bioplastic. See Access Denied: Scrapyard Military at the end of the NPC's section for more on this. Age: 43 Height/Weight/Build: 5' 8"/80kg /stocky Eyes: Dull grey, nervous Hair: Greying brown, cropped Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Love/Obsession/Humble Eiko Tukanu, former master of the 'Island Queen': Strapping, tall and with a shock of slate grey hair, Tukanu cuts an impressive figure and in Olivieras absence, he is one of the major community leaders in Perdition. It comes as a surprise to many newcomers that Tukanu is a deeply spiritual man who sees the eventual fate of the natives, the newcomers and the Incorporate as tied together with unbreakable bonds. The loss of his boat, the 'Island Queen' during a gunrunning operation between the Zion Islands and Westcape has had a major effect on Tukanu. He has since abandoned almost all his work for the resistance and spent time constructing a new boat. This has led to overt tension between him and Orisi, a fact that has not escaped the notice of the community. Age: 49 Height/Weight/Build: 6' 3"/78kg/Well-muscled Eyes: Blue, serious Hair: Grey, crew cut Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Freedom/Faith/Confident Major Erika Weiss, Hanover Security Service: Senior HSS officer in the immediate area of Perdition, Weiss' sole mission is to advise and observe young Dezmir Malkewicz and if possible, prevent him making any serious gaffes. A hardened soldier, Weiss has been in the frontline of many Hanover conflicts and does not relish the idea of babysitting the 'golden boy' as she refers to Malkewicz. All HSS troops in Perdition answer directly to her and she has her own cadre of three soldiers from her Grauschurzenjager unit. A deeply suspicious woman, she has many of the buildings in the newcomer part of town and a few in the native part, bugged for both sound and vision. Not much gets past Weiss. Age: 34 Height/Weight/Build: 5' 9"/63kg/Athletic, fit Eyes: Hazel, alert Hair: Sandy, short, swept back Goal/Motivation/Attitude: Accomplishment/Professionalism/Disciplined ACCESS DENIED Rogue Trooper The small Peacekeeper detachment in Dyfedd is very quietly having a fit. The loss of Sergeant Jason Corrigan on a training mission is a major embarrassment. He somehow junked all their tracking and transmission systems and just disappeared. To make matters worse, an agent from Internal Security has just been flown in. A nasty agent. An agent that all the staff has heard of. Dan Spector is a man who gets results. Dan Spector is a man whose has never failed at anything. His first move is to try and recruit spies and informants in Perdition and the surrounding settlements, in both the newcomer and native populations. Keeping a lid on the entire thing is the next big step. Spector believes that Corrigan's psychological conditioning has broken down and that he has gone quite mad. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Driven by this belief, Spector will attribute almost any murder or other act of violence in Perdition or the surrounding area to the rogue shock trooper. Meanwhile, Corrigan is holed up in the shantytown at the back of Perdition, living on dried rations and trying desperately to contact he native resistance fighters. He makes forays out in to the interior of the island, trying to find their camps or supply caches. Despite his undoubted skills he has bee spotted by one of Olivieras scouts, one Rajandra Singh. Singh has reported this back to Oliviera who strongly suspects that Corrigan is an advance scout from the Hanover Grauschurzenjager division. The scene is set, on all sides, for one massive misunderstanding. Scrapyard Military Suvaroff is an eccentric, a harmless madman. He is tolerated, even liked, by the natives of Perdition. He is a simple man, slow of wit but with a great talent for building useful things out of scrap. He is also a man who is easily hurt, and at the moment he is very hurt indeed. This simple soul loves the natives of Perdition as if they were his own family. He sees what Hanover is doing and despises them for it. Therefore, he is doing the only thing he knows how to: build things to destroy Hanover with. Under Suvaroffs house is a small bunker he has dug by hand into the hard earth. In this bunker is a growing collection of weapons built by the scrapman. At present, he has built four recoilless rifles, numerous powerful crossbows, some landmines and even a single anti-aircraft missile. He has taken his inspiration from military histories and technical textbooks available on CommCore, so the weapons are slightly archaic. The time must soon come for him to uncover his cache and arm the native of Perdition for war. COLONIAL TIMES NEWSNET Dyfedd/Westcape/Pacifica/Poseidon HANOVER ACCUSED OF 'CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY' In a stormy press conference today on Dyfedd, Native rights spokesman Eiko Tukanu claimed that Hanover Industries had committed "crimes against humanity". Tukanu, a native of the Westcape area, made his claims in front of several members of the international press. Mr Tukanu stated that: "The military arm of Hanover Industries has been carrying out an escalating war against natives and newcomer colonists in the Westcape area. Their most recent act of barbarism was to use weaponry whose use against human beings has been outlawed for centuries." Mr Tukanu stated he did not have any documentary evidence to back up his claim. A representative of Der Kolonie (The Colony) virtual netmagazine took Mr Tukanu to task over his allegations. The reporter alluded to Mr Tukanu being a member of the armed native resistance in Westcape and accused him of gunrunning in his boat, the 'Island Queen'. Mr Tukanu responded by saying that he was not a member of any armed resistance group and had never engaged in any criminal activity. The reporter for Der Kolonie became agitated and physically threatened Mr Tukanu. The reporter was then ejected from the conference by vigilant Lavender Organics security staff. The press conference continued with Mr Tukanu stating that: "Hanover Industries are using all manner of illegal and immoral weapons in and around Westcape. Anti-aircraft weapons, incendiary devices and cluster munitions are all being used extensively. The GEO and all right thinking sentients, human and cetacean, must make plain to Hanover that this action is unacceptable." Mr Tukanu then left, citing urgent appointments. In an official press release from Kingston, Hanover spokeswoman Racheal O'Rourke said: "These are serious accusations, but ones that I feel are completely unfounded. Hanover does not use, or condone the use of, any of the weapons mentioned by Mr Tukanu. Further to this, we will be serving a writ against Mr Tukanu for libel. Thank you, that is all." Further comment came from Deputy Marshal Bryan Flanagan, who assured all residents of Westcape that the matter would be "investigated in a fair and equitable manner, with equal credence being given to both sides." The >questionnaire was fun too. The Fan Poll is the element of the gaming site that is going to be very interesting once it gets going. I thinkt hat there's a lot of potential for some good stuff on the Montoya Files pages, and we'll see what folks submit for that. I've already got a couple of player characters submitted for that, and some of my players will have their characters posted up there. NPCs are another matter...always looking for some good ones to post, with backgrounds, of course. Adventure seeds and anything else folks want to submit is are more than welcome. :) Glad you liked it. And thanks for votiing. I think the Fan Poll will yield a mixed set of results, simply because folks won't want to dislike any of the game elements possibly. There are six votes in so far, so get your players and others in on the voting, folks. :) ... Age is a matter of mind. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. One of my favorite things about working on BP is seeing what others do with the game. I get extremely motivated when I see players so thouroughly involved in the setting. Thanks much for the enthusiam. FWIW - One of my two playtest campaigns is set in Dyfedd, but most of the game has centered around events on Westcape. The characters are all members of the law enforcement element of the GEO extention office in Dyfedd (Arch 111). There is a deputy marshal, two peacekeeper officers, and two native patrol NCOs (one of which is actually an orca). A *brief* synopsis to date: A "sealed room" murder investigation leads, though many twists and turns, to the destruction of El Pez de la Luz and an underground/underwater shootout with an unusually violent Blue Water Circle cell operating out of Westape. A not so accidental navigation error puts Dyfedd in the path of a small hurricane, under the cover of which, a fully aware Hugo requests political asylum with the GEO and helps in its own computer-napping. Another frantic shoot out on Westcape ends with the GEO and LavOrg allied against GenDiver commandos hunting Hugo, one of the characters in a cryo-oxiginator, and Hugo in the relative sancuary of Prosperity station. An undercover assignment to document the allegations against Hanover leads back to Westcape and encounters with Oliviera, Ortega, The Storm Widow, and incoming Hanover fire. After barely surviving a Hanover ambush, backing up Oliviera during a raid by Hanover, rescuing him from a Hanover compound, sinking a Hanover ship, and generally wreaking island-wide havoc, Westcape is now occupied by a considerable GEO peackeeping force, and the environment is one of high tension and barely checked aggression. Note: These events are not necceaarily canon yet, though you may recognize bits and pieces in UC and some might make it into future supplements.
