I took the big map, scanned a bitmap and traced the general outline of the world (polar caps etc) and then corrected the grid for a constant linear measurment on longitude and latitude lines. I then imported bitmaps of the smaller regional maps, rescaled them to fit the general scale and traced then in all of their glory. I even came up with a special catalog of symbols. Later I added coloration for mountainous-rough regions, desert terrain and savanna. I still intend to use the contour lines to create a colorized relief map (red for high points and blue for low points) as well as include a set of underwater contours or at least relief shading. (I've been busy on other projects lately.) If anyone wants a copy to play with, I can zip the file and attach it to a posting (its 512kb in size.)
